Metamorphic Rocks Part 1

What is a metamorphic rock?
A rock is any rock that forms
from another rock as a result of
changes in heat or pressure. Some
types of metamorphic rocks are
marble, slate, gneiss, schist, and
quartzite.
How do other rocks differ from metamorphic?
Metamorphic rocks differ from
other rocks because metamorphic
is formed when heat and pressure
is applied to the rock, igneous is
formed by the cooling of magma,
and sedimentary is formed by
compaction and cementing of
layers.
How can metamorphic rocks differ in appearance?
Foliated metamorphic rocks such as
gneiss, phyllite, schist, and slate have a
layered or banded appearance that is
produced by exposure to heat and directed
pressure. Non-foliated metamorphic rocks
such as hornfels, marble, quartzite, and
novaculite do not have a layered or banded
appearance.
