Notes
Definitions:
 Element – made up of one kind of atom (protons,
neutrons, electrons); the building blocks of all matter
 Substance – a form of matter that is different than any
other form of matter
 Chemical reaction – the change that occurs when two
or more substances (reactants) interact to form new
substances (products)
o Example: mixing citric acid and sodium
bicarbonate with water, fizzes = creation of
carbon dioxide (CO2) which is a gas
Notes:
 Substances can be described three ways:
o Chemical name (magnesium sulfate)
o Common name (Epsom salts)
o Chemical formula (MgSO4)
