Georgia Regions
Coastal Plain:
Size – Largest region, 60% of the state, 3/5
of the state
Physical Characteristics – Mostly flat with
low relief
Special Features – The Fall Line (The
prehistoric inland shoreline); further
inland, land is more suited for agriculture
Type of soil – Sand/clay, not very fertile;
poorly drained, swampy areas common
Agriculture – Grows here, except pine and
brush, called “the pine barrens”, used for
pasture and timber
Other – Okefenokee Swamp is located here

Piedmont:
Size – 2nd largest region, 30% of the state
Physical Characteristics – Rolling hills
with many valleys
Special Features – Piedmont is French for
“foot of the mountains”, lies between the
Fall Line and the mountain region
Type of soil – Large areas of solid bedrock
found right below the surface, well
drained and will support crops
Agriculture – Cotton, soybeans, and wheat
Other – Many rivers and streams flowing
North and South, rocks create rapids

Blue Ridge:
Size – Stretches from northeast Georgia to
southern Pennsylvania
Physical Characteristics – Steep slopes,
mountains and valleys
Special Features – Highest point in
Georgia, Brasstown Bald is located here
Type of soil – Less than 1% of Georgia’s
prime farm land, high rainfall, growing
period between 180 and 210 days a year
Agriculture – Apples, corn, vegetables,
hardwoods
Other – Many rivers begin here, such as the
Chattahoochee and Savannah Rivers

Ridge & Valley:
Size – Region stretches from northern New
York to central Alabama
Physical Characteristics – Long parallel
ridges with valleys
Special Features – Its highest relief is only
700 feet. This area is known for textile
and carpet manufacturing.
Type of soil – Softer sedimentary rock,
ridges – sandstone, valleys – limestone
and shale and sedimentary deposits
Agriculture – Grows soybeans, wheat,
cotton. This is 4% of Georgia’s prime
farmland.
Other – Valley floor used form farming &
pastures

Appalachian Plateau:
Size – Smallest region, 300 square miles of
northwest Georgia
Physical Characteristics – Limestone
caves, deep canyons, and interesting rock
formations
Special Features – Site of Civil War Battle
Chickamauga, Cloudland Canyon is
located here, Sand Mountain and
Lookout Mountain
Type of soil – Sedimentary rock, sandstone,
limestone, and shale
Agriculture – Small amounts of corn and
soybeans
Other – Georgia’s only source of coal
