a. −3x = 15 Divide each side by -3

1x = −5, x = −5
Check: −3x = 15
−3−5 = 15
15 = 15 so x = −5 is a solution
b. −16 = −4y
Divide each side by -4
÷ −4 ÷ −4
4 = 1y , 4 = y or y = 4
Check: −16 = −4y
− 16 = −44
−16 = −16 so 4 = y is a solution

Solve: −5x = −10 Multiply each side by -5
