Grade 2 Fact Fluency Plan—2.OA.B.2
Daily practice of each strategy is encouraged. This can be done as a paper-and-pencil activity, or as a game with the tools listed below. Teachers
may want to begin whole group mathematics lessons with five minutes of fluency practice, with students responding on white boards to check for
student understanding, and for students to explain their thinking. In addition, consider finding time once each week (10-15 minutes) to allow
students to practice in pairs or small group, while providing targeted intervention for students who have not yet mastered a strategy.
Some general materials are useful to build fact fluency:
ten frames
dominos
dot cards/dot plates
dice
playing cards
“I have…, Who has…” decks
Songs, chants, rhythms with physical movement and/or showing numbers with hands/signs can also be effective.
Assessments are included/linked, and are designed to be given (bi-)weekly to monitor student progress. Students should be given 2 minutes to
complete the test. It is suggested to give students the “FINAL” test throughout the year to progress monitor with a standard assessment.
Suggested Time Line—can/should be adjusted based on student readiness

Students build on their understanding of
counting on to add 1 more or counting back
to find 1 less. Student can draw part of a
number line to model: one jump to the left is
the given number minus one, and one jump
to the right is the given number plus one.

Description

Created 7/2015
Students build on their understanding of
counting on to add 2 more or counting back
to find 2 less. Students can draw part of a
number line to model: 2 jumps to the left to
find 2 less, and 2 jumps to the right to add 2
to any number.
Adding 10 to a single-digit number results in
a 2-digit sum. Students should build
understanding and automaticity that will be
needed during “using tens” strategy as well
as the foundations of place value when
composing ten and a single-digit number or
decomposing a teen number to 10 and a
single digit number.

Grade 2 Fact Fluency Plan—2.OA.B.2
Compose up through a ten or decompose
down through a ten. Students use their
understanding of the flexibility of numbers
to break apart addends to create simpler
facts, using ten.
9+7 = _
8+_ = 14
Use 10
Strategy
Think Aloud and model with 10 frames:
T12
9 + 7 = ? I can take 1 from the 7 and add it Use Tens
to the 9 to make 10. Then I have 6 left
from the 7, and 10 + 6 = 16.
8 + ? = 14 I know 8 plus 2 more equals 10,
and then 4 more makes 14, so 8 + 6 = 14
Using Ten Notes & Games:
 Who Has More
 Condition
 High and Low
 Addition BINGO
 Take Away
 Match ‘Em Up

Think Aloud and model with domino
T14
doubles: 4 + 5 = ?
Use Doubles
I know that 4 + 4 = 8, and 5 is 1 more than
4, so my answer is 1 more than 8, so it’s 9.
13 = 7 + ? I know that 7 + 7 = 14, and 13
is one less, so if I take 1 less than 7, that is
6. 7 + 6 = 13.
