HP Create: Optical Illusions Sweetheart Thaumatrope DIY
Sometimes you remember toys from your childhood and realize how fun it would be to recreate
them! Thaumatropes have been around since the early 1900's, and I remember my own bird in a
cage optical illusion toy version as an 80's kid. Spin the circle really fast and the images will blend!
This will make the perfect card to give to your sweetheart, or friend, this Valentine’s Day. I
provided some printables below to create the heart cards you see above, but you can also design
your own. Maybe add your sweetheart's face to project, instead of the words? Give this Valentine’s
Day DIY a try!
Supplies:

HP Officejet Pro 8610 AiO Printer + HP Original Ink
HP Bright White Inkjet Paper
Scissors
Bamboo skewer
Hot glue
Free Printable Hearts and Words (see below)
Optional: a picture of your sweetheart or any other photo that you want to customize it
with

Directions:
Step 1
Print out the printables and gather the rest of your materials.

Cut out the circles.

Step 3
Hot glue the back of the heart circle onto the end of the skewer.

Step 4
Hot glue the back of the word circle onto the back of the heart circle.
TIP #1: This is where you can either swap out the heart or word circle with a picture of your sweetie.

You're all done! If you trim the skewer you can pop these into an envelope and ship them off to your
loved ones.
