Director's Notes
MyrelationshipwithWilliamShakespearehasbeenalongstandingone.Iamdelighted
tohavereachedmythirtiethyearofBardism.IrememberstudyingMacbethatschoolin
themid80sand,reflectingonmyexperiencewhenIdiscoveredthisShakespearestory
forthefirsttime,IwantanaudiencetohavethesameexperienceofaweasIfeltatthat
time.
MacbethisoneofShakespeare’smostwellknownplays.Butwhatistheplayreally
about?Well,tome,Macbethisaplayaboutfear.Thescriptdrawstheaudienceintothe
mindsetofamanhauntedbyhisownchoices.Hisself-perpetuatingviolentactions
ironicallystemfromhisowncharacterweaknesses.Macbethisinfearallthetime,from
theearlyreprimandsfromhiswifeLadyMacbethtothecountershockathisown
atrociousactionsofmurder.Hisfearisshowntotheaudienceprimarilythroughhis
decayingconscienceashereflectsonhowtheWeirdSisterstrickedhimintomisreading
theirprophesies.InMacbeth,Shakespeareshowsusaweakcharacterwhocannotcope
withunbalance,andwhoreactstotheoverly-ambitiousandcontrollingLadyMacbeth
byallowinghimselftobemanipulatedintoactionsofmurderthathewouldnot
otherwisehavecontemplated.
IchosetoreplicatetraditionalShakespeareanstaging;athruststageandsimplisticset
decorandbarescenery.Iwantedtheaudience'sfocustobeplacedontheactorsand
thestory.Mynextchallengewastoaddresstheissueofweaponryandwhathasbeen,
andstillis,customaryfor(primarily)mentowearaspartoftheirceremonialattire.I
wantedtobring“fear”andpotentialdangerintoeveryscenewiththewearingofthe
traditionalsgian-dughanddirkaspartofregulardress.
Ihavealwayseditedmyownscripts.IbelieveasadirectorthisisapathImustwalk
alonetopresentmyvisionoftheplaytotheaudienceandtogetinsidetheplay.
MacbethisarguablyregardedasaTragedy,whenintruthitisaHistorical.Theaudience
hasaglimpseoflifeathousandyearsago.ThisisbasedonatruestoryofMacBethad
macFindláichwhoreignedpeacefullyasKingfrom1040for17years.However
Shakespearetookanenormousstepawayfromtherealhistoricalfigurewhenhewrote
theMacbethweknowtodayintoamurderoustyrant.
Asadirectormymainchallengewasthetheme.IwantedtoplaceMacbethinaperiod
thatIknewandhadlivedthrough,andwhichmeantsomethingtome.Scotlandinthe
90'swasaplacewithanenergy.Itwastransitioningfromthetraditionalintoaneraof
new!Inbacklashtothe80's,adecadeofostentatiouspostfeminism,wesawyoung
womentrytobreakthatglassceilingforequalitywiththeirmalepeers.Itwasthetime
ofthe“ladette”.Atthistimeinterestinglywealsosawadevelopmentof“newman”,an
open-mindedreceptivemaleintunewithwomen.Thescriptoverpoweredthedirection
oftheplay,anditwasapparentveryearlyduringrehearsalsthataparamilitary-esque
themewastheonlywaytopresentthisstory.Macbethaffordedmetheopportunityto
placethecharactersinthisperiodandallowedthetranscribingofmalerolesintofemale
andcostumingfemalecharactersinidenticalmilitaryuniformstomen.
IwasinInvernessandEdinbughinthe1990s.IhavebeentoCawdorCastleandseenthe
thistletreethatgrowsthroughit.Thisisaplaywithsymbolicpotencypresentedthrough
askillfulscript.Ithasbeenapleasuretohavehadthisopportunitytosharethis
incredibleplaywithyou.

NorthumberlandPlayersislive,local,andcommittedtobringingqualitytheatretothe
wholefamily.
Inits39years,NorthumberlandPlayershaswonTheatreOntarioawardsforperformance,
directing,musicandproduction.Theyalsohaveaveryactiveyoungpeople'stheatre
programwhichperformsamajorchildren’sChristmasproductionandrunsdramacamps
throughoutthesummermonths.
NorthumberlandPlayersprovidesopportunitiesinallaspectsofqualitytheatre––over300
enthusiastic,un-paidvolunteerswhoworkasactors,directors,producers,setbuilders,
costumemakers,etc.,areproofthereispassionforlivetheatreinNorthumberlandCounty.
Whenyouattendanot-for-profittheatrecompany,yourentertainmentdollarsstayinthe
community,theculturalandeconomicbenefitsripplingthroughoutNorthumberlandCounty
HomeforNorthumberlandPlayersisthehistoricSecondStreetFirehallinCobourg.The
buildinghousesthePlayers'administrativeoffice,rehearsalspacesandaground-floor
theatre.TheFirehallTheatreisanintimatevenueadaptabletopresentbothclassicand
innovativetheatre.
NorthumberlandPlayersCostumeWarehouseatUnit4,450CampbellStreetinCobourg,is
thehomeofthePlayers'vastcollectionofperiodandcontemporarycostumesavailablefor
rentalsfortheatricalandotherevents.NorthumberlandPlayersalsoleasesTheThirdSpace
onLoveshinRoadforsetstorageandconstruction.
Over10,000peopleattendedourproductionslastyear.Wehopeevenmorepeoplewillsee
ourshowsduringthe2015-16season.
BeaPlayer-Therearemanyroles!
Wealsowelcomemembersandvolunteerstojoinusinproducingqualitytheatre.
•MembershaveavoiceinNorthumberlandPlayers,avoteattheAnnualGeneralMeeting,
andcanserveontheBoardofDirectors.Membershipfeesprovideon-goingsupportforthe
administrationofthePlayers.Membershipsare$25.AFamilyMembershipof$40includes
spousesand,asnon-votingmembers,childrenandyouth.
•Volunteersparticipateinallaspectsofcommunitytheatreinacting,artistic,backstage,
clerical,construction,productionand/ortechnicalrolesontheproductionteamsorin
administrativeroles.Manyhave"learnedonthejob".
•DonorsandSponsorsprovidefinancialsupport.Forexample,agrantfromRotaryenabled
ustoupgradethesoundandlightingintheFirehallTheatre.Thisyear,Northumberland
Playershasimprovedthemainentrancetothetheatre.

HunterhasappearedwithNorthumberlandPlayerssince2013,
whenheplayedalostboyinPeterPan.HeplayedMr.Wormin
JamesandtheGiantPeach,thencontinuedontoworkwiththe
CapitolTheaterinthejuniorproductionofTheLittleMermaid.
HunterhasworkedbehindthescenesasalightoperatorforLes
Misérables.Whenheisnotonstage,heplaysfootballonhis
team,theChargers,withKinsmanMinorFootballLeague,or
hangingwithfriends.HunterisingradeeightatDaleRoadSenior
Publicschoolandhaswonthedramaawardinpreviousyears.

Adrian,producerwithShakespeareStreetTheatre,isproudto
becollaboratingwithNorthumberlandPlayersforthefirst
time.Histheatricalskillsarevaried,includingviolinist,singer,
carpenter,freeloader,producerandactor.After7yearsinthe
filmindustryincludingBridgetJonesDiary,TheLordofthe
RingsTrilogy,andTheLastSamurai,AdrianmovedtoCobourg
andhasproducedAMidsummerNightsDream,Romeoand
JulietandTwelfthNight.Hehasbeenknowntoappearin
smallTVrolesovertheyears.Whenhe'snotworking,Adrian
enjoysspendinghissparetimewithhiswife,directorPaula
Worley,histhreechildren,Angus,SaxonandVivienne,andhis
dogsathomeinCobourg.

MaureenhasworkedbehindthescenesforthePlayerssince
2007.ShewascostumedesignerforSteelMagnolias,andstage
managedTheTroublewithRichard,TheKitchenWitches,and
It'saWonderfulLife.SheispleasedtobeworkingattheFirehall
theatreforthefirsttimeonaproductionofShakespeare's
Macbethaftermanyyears,inanotherlife,watchingstudents
performShakespearescenebyscene.Thankyoutothecastand

Paulinagotherstartintheatrewhenshewaselevenasa
gameshowfanatichillbillyinahumoroustakeontheHatfields

hadapassionforpretendingtobesomeoneelse,andhasbeen
giventhechanceforthefirsttimeinthreeyearswiththree
partsinMacbeth.
