• Most mistakes are due to mother tongue
interference.
• Students tend to “translate” from their
mother tongue, often forgetting that
English is a different language with
different rules and conventions.

• Most common mistakes are as follows:
– Prepositions after certain verbs, e.g. accuse
somebody for doing something
– Misuse of the infinitive, e.g. He is capable to succeed
– Misuse of the gerund to express purpose, e.g. He
went to Britain for learning English
– Wrong use of simple and continuous tenses
(especially the Present Continuous and the Present
Simple used instead of the Present Perfect)

– Wrong use of past tenses (especially in narratives)
– Incorrect use of collocations and expressions, e.g.
students take exams, they don’t give exams
– Incorrect use of articles, especially the definite article
– Incorrect word order (mainly adjectives)
– Syntax errors (especially in long, complex sentences).
