How does geography influence the way people live, move, and define regions?
A. Use an atlas to complete your maps of Egypt and the Middle East.
B. Use a device with Google Earth and the “Gift of the Nile” paper to answer the
following questions. Make MANY bullet points.
What makes the Nile River Valley attractive for settlement?
• THE NILE RIVER – used for water, fish, soil, highway, sewer system
• Egypt is centrally located at a crossroads between three continents with easy
access to the Mediterranean Sea for trade
• Cycle of the Nile provided essential flood water and silt for agriculture
• Flat – aids farming and agriculture
• Desert provided protection from invasion (also contained oases that were good for
farming)
• Many natural resources from metal and semi-precious stone mines
• Quarries with stone for building
How did the Egyptians use the Nile to define areas and regions?
• Black Land = fertile land that bordered the Nile
• Red Land = desert lands far from Nile
• Upper (SOUTHERN Egypt) and Lower Egypt (NORTHERN Egypt) – due to the
fact that the Nile flows NORTH
C. Use “The Aswan Dam” paper to answer the question below.
How has the geography of Egypt changed from ancient times to now?
• Political lines are drawn for countries today
• City of Alexandria is now underwater in the Mediterranean Sea – was once a very
important ancient city
• In the 1960s the Aswan High Dam was built to end the natural cycle of floods
from the Nile – this also created Lake Nasser, which flooded many ancient towns
and monuments, some of which were moved to save them
D. Use “Working the Land” and “The Farming Life” to answer the following question.

How did Egypt’s geography affect their farming methods and daily life?
• Farmers could grow a surplus (paid to the pharaoh in taxes for building and export)
• They created irrigation canals, but had to carry water from the Nile too
• They grew mainly wheat and barley for bread and beer, but many other vegetables,
fruit, beans, as well as flax for linen cloth
• Cycle of the Nile created their “calendar”:
o Akhet (Inundation) = Nile floods from July to Oct., causing positive and
negative consequences
o Peret = Nov to March, growing time then harvest
o Shemu = April to June, dry summer months
E. Use “Boats on the Nile” to answer the following questions.
How did geography influence the way people moved in ancient Egypt?
• There was no road network in Eygpt – the Nile was their main highway, so they
used boats
• They would dig canals from the Nile to reach desert places and could easily reach
the Mediterranean
• You could row upstream aided by the winds or downstream with the current
• Threat of crocodiles!
What technology did ancient Egyptians use to help them move?
• Earlier boats (around 4000 BCE) were made of papyrus – they wre cheap and easy
to make for crossing the river or fishing
• Wood was scarce, but the royal family could trade for wood to make huge vessels
• Use planks technology and rope/grass to tie the pieces of wood together –
technology so good they could carry huge stones for building
What role do you think trade played in Egyptian civilization?
• Important to gain natural resources they needed like wood
• Helped them gain wealth and influence in the area and maintain power for
thousands of years
