African Canadian Studies Early African Civilizations: Axum The Ancient Civilization of Axum:
· The next kingdom to rise to power in Africa was Axum. Axum was located between Kush and the Red Sea. It is the largest port city and became a trade center.
· Axum traded ivory and possibly slaves with Africa and Arabia. The kingdom of Axum also had its own money coins that were used to purchase goods.
· Luxury items made in Axum were exported to the Roman Empire and Egypt.
· In the 4 th century A.D., Christianity was introduced. King Ezana adopted the new religion, which enabled Axum to trade with the Greek world.
· Unfortunately, the rise of Islam in the 8 th century A.D. isolated the ancient civilization of Axum and the kingdom began to decline.
