NAME: Lindsey Empson
DATE OF LESSON:
LENGTH OF LESSON: 30 minutes TIME LESSON WILL BE GIVEN: 11:30
GRADE LEVEL: Fourth
COOPERATING TEACHER: Mrs. Wilson
CONTENT AREA: Science
TITLE OF LESSON: What are Earthquakes?
DISTRICT/STATE STANDARD(S) BEING ADDRESSED
4 ES 5.a. Students know some changes in the earth are due to slow processes, such as erosion,
and some changes are due to rapid processes, such as landslides, volcanic eruptions, and
earthquakes.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (ELD)STANDARDS BEING ADDRESSED
Listening and Speaking:
I: Listening attentively to stories/information and identify key details and concepts using
both verbal and non verbal responses
EA: Listen attentively to more complex stories/information on new topics and identify
the main points and supporting details.
Reading Fluency and Systematic Vocabulary Development
EI: Apply knowledge of content-related vocabulary to discussions and reading.
I: Use content-related vocabulary in discussions and reading.
OBJECTIVES STATED IN TERMS OF STUDENT OUTCOMES (BE SPECIFIC)
The students will understand what an earthquake is and why they occur.

SPONGE ACTIVITY
ANTICIPATORY SET
The teacher will give the students Master 14a and 14b and ask the students to cut out the pieces.
The teacher will pull down the world map. The teacher will tell the students that this is a puzzle
of the world. The teacher will ask the students to put the puzzle together.
LESSON ORGANIZATION
1Grouping students-whole group and pairs
2.Differentiation /Accommodation
English Learners and Resource students: The teacher will use the vocabulary
cards to provide visuals for English Learners. The students will be making a map of the Earth’s
crust broken up by the plates. The vocabulary books will provide a visual organization of
vocabulary for both English Learners and resource students. The teacher will use a powerpoint
presentation with many pictures to present the information in the chapter.
3.Direct Teaching Steps
Academic Language to be addressed in this lesson: crust, plate, fault,
earthquake.
Once the students have completed the puzzle, the teacher will lead a discussion about the
Earth’s crust and how it relates to earthquakes. The teacher will use a PowerPoint during this
discussion. The teacher will show the students a picture of the earth with a quarter cut out of it.
The teacher will emphasize the outer layer, explaining that it is called the earth’s crust. The
teacher will say, “The crust is made up of gigantic slabs of rock, called plates. These plates fit
together like pieces of a puzzle. Each piece of the puzzle that you have completed is a plate.
These plates are always moving.” As teacher explains this, she will show slide number four.
Using slide number 5, the teacher will say, “There are breaks or cracks in Earth’s crust where the
plates come together. The cracks are called faults.” For the English learners, the teacher will
explain that in English, fault has two means. “Usually we use it when we someone is to blame
for doing something wrong. But the way we use it in science is when we are talking about where
the plates meet.”
Using slide 6, the teacher will explain to students that plate interact in different ways.
“Some plates slowly slide past each other. Everyone put your hands together and slowly slide
them up and down. Some plates push together. Now push your hands together. And some
plates move apart. Now pull your hands apart.”
The teacher will use slides 7, 8, and 9 to explain what happens when plates move and
define earthquakes. The teacher will give the students the definition of an earthquake and explain
that mountains and volcanoes also form when plates move.
The teacher will show the students slide 10, and say, “Not all places have earthquakes.
On this map, all of the dots are earthquakes. Most earthquakes happen near the edges of plates.
You can see the outline of some of the plates. There is an area around the Pacific Ocean where
some Earth’s plates meet. It is here that most earthquakes happen.”
5.Guided PracticeThe teacher will also ask the following questions: “What are the different ways in which
plates can interact with each other?” (plates can slide past each other, move under or over each
other, or move apart.) “Where do most earthquakes occur?” (Most earthquakes happen near the
edges of Earth’s plates, especially in the area called the Ring of Fire.) “What can happen when
plates move?” (Earthquakes, mountain building, and volcanic eruptions can occur when Earth’s
plates move.)
The teacher will help the students complete questions 1 through 5 on page 99 of their
Reading and Writing in Science workbooks. The teacher will read the fill in the blank questions
and prompt students to find the answers in their books. The teacher will ask for volunteers to
share the answers.
6.Independent PracticeThe teacher will pass out a worksheet, What is an Earthquake? The students will
complete this worksheet independently. The teacher will tell students that they may use their
science books, workbooks, or the notes that we took.
7.Assessment of Lesson/ Independent Practice and rubric for scoring/evaluating
The teacher will collect the What is an Earthquake? worksheet. This worksheet will be
graded based on completeness. Each section is worth 25 points. The students will be required to
answer each question in complete sentences. Points will be taken off for wrong answers and
incomplete sentences.
8. Closure
The teacher will give each student a post-it note and ask the students to write where in the United
States earthquakes occur. The teacher will collect these as the students line up for lunch.
