Converting a mixed number
into an improper fraction
To convert a mixed number into an improper fraction, follow these steps:
1. Multiply the denominator by the whole part and add the numerator.
2. Put the resultant number as the numerator of the improper fraction.
3. Write the denominator. (It is the same as the one in the mixed number.)
WORKED Example

Convert 2 --8- into an improper fraction.
THINK

To obtain the numerator of the improper fraction,
multiply the denominator by the whole part and
add the numerator. (That is, the numerator is
8 × 2 + 3 = 19.) The denominator of the improper
fraction is the same as the one in the mixed
number.
