STRAND: Number TOPIC: Fractions Converting a mixed number into an improper fraction To convert a mixed number into an improper fraction, follow these steps: 1. Multiply the denominator by the whole part and add the numerator. 2. Put the resultant number as the numerator of the improper fraction. 3. Write the denominator. (It is the same as the one in the mixed number.) WORKED Example 3 Convert 2 --8- into an improper fraction. THINK WRITE To obtain the numerator of the improper fraction, multiply the denominator by the whole part and add the numerator. (That is, the numerator is 8 × 2 + 3 = 19.) The denominator of the improper fraction is the same as the one in the mixed number. 2 3--8- = 19 -----8 Try these Convert each of the following mixed numbers into an improper fraction. 1 1 3--5- 2 2 5--8- 3 1 2--7- 4 2 7--8- 5 3 1--2- 6 2 4--5- 7 4 3--4- 8 1 1--9- 9 5 5--6- 10 4 3--7- John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd 2001
