Lesson 8: Distributive Property
The Distributive Property states that the product of a number and the sum
(or difference) of two numbers is equal to the sum (or difference) of the two
products. In other words, you can distribute the value in front of the
parentheses to both values inside the parentheses.
Here’s how it looks: 5(2 1 4) 5 5 • 2 1 5 • 4

19. The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle can be written two ways,
P 5 2l 1 2w
P 5 2(l 1w)
Use the distributive property to show that the formulas are equivalent.
Then use both formulas to find the perimeter of a rectangle with length 12 cm
and width 8 cm.
20. Hilary is going to buy 2 CDs and 5 DVDs. Use the distributive property to
show two ways to calculate the total cost if the CD and DVD cost $11 each.
Then find the total cost.
