Summary sentences and paragraphs
• Within effective communication for technical writing there are two useful processes that
are implemented.
•
These expectations can include all formatting standards, and even though ‘plain style’ disagrees with the use of images, if the writer’s audience expects them then it takes precedence.
Read the paragraph assigned to your group. Then consider the summary’s purpose and
audience. What problems do you see in the ideas, their wording, and the paragraph’s overall
readability?
1. A piece of effectively written text takes into account three factors: the writer’s skill level,
their gift for creativity, and their mastery of arranging rhetoric. Readability is the subject of
much active research, as reader-focused studies are focused on finding a systematic method
for plain style writing. A shift in the definition of plain style writing has spurred modern
writing conventions to emphasize audience instead of grammar.
2. While the idea of being able to access a firm numeral value to the accessibility of a text is
desireable, this approach ultimately assumes that all readers will approach a text with the
exact same perspective, because people are inherently different, this method of appraisal of
texts is imperfect.
3. Effectively communicated work in technical writing uses the concepts of plain style
tradition and readability measures. Whereby it is more important to understand the
audience and organize arguments in a clear, logical manner. Thus, the plain approach puts
less importance on grammar and style.
4. A more in depth look at readability shows that the text should not take long to understand.
This means the text should not have an excessive reading time, reader should have a
recollection of text, and theories are made clear. It is important to make good word choices
in order for the text to be readable for the audience. Lastly, consider audience because
knowing the audience allows one to know how to write the paper as well as gain a better
understanding of the purpose for the text.
5. Furthermore, plain language produces clear, precise writing by changing word and sentence
structure as well as adding organizational tools, including headings and subheadings, table
of contents, topic sentences, and short paragraphs. Finally, plain style addresses the
presentation of the document, attending to issues such as spacing and font selection.
Because the reader's interpretation of charts and graphs may vary from the writer's intended
meaning, plain style dismisses their use. Thus, the plain language approach ensures that the
general public are able to efficiently read and understand the text, preventing confusion.
6. When it comes to written communication, being able to straightforwardly present your
ideas becomes paramount. Without the haze of jargon, inaccessible vocabulary, and
underdeveloped grammar, syntax, and sentence length, the reader is able to gain a basic
understanding of the ideas put forth. Thus, to make a text effective while using rhetoric,
there are several issues that need to be clarified prior to the text being finalized.
