Procedure 1. Explaintostudentsthatacompoundwordismadeupoftwowordsthatarejoinedtogether.Sometimesthe twowordskeeptheirmeaningswhentheyarejoinedtogether.Forexample,abackpackisapackthatyou wearonyourback.Sometimesthetwowordsmeansomethingdifferentwhentheyarejoinedtogether.For example,abutterflyisaninsect—ithasnothingtodowithbutter! 2.Writethewordsbaseball, mailbox,andcupcakeonasheetofchartpaperortheclasschalkboard.Invite studentvolunteerstocirclethetwowordsthatmakeupeachcompoundword. 3.Loopapieceoftapeontothebackofeachofthesixheartcutoutsthatyoupreparedforthelesson.Stickthe heartsinrandomorderonthechalkboardorchartpaper. 4.Invitestudentstochoosetwoheartsthatcanbecombinedtomakeacompoundword.(Studentsshouldcreate thefollowingcompoundwords:sailboat, upstairs,andcardboard.) Guided Practice 1. Tellstudentsyouwouldlikethemtopracticemakingtheirowncompoundwords. 2.Paireachstudentwithapartnerandgiveeachpairacopyofthehearttemplates. 3.Haveeachpartnercutoutsixhearts.Challengestudentstothinkofthreecompoundwords.Havethemwrite eachwordpartononeheart.(Forexample,onepartnermightwriterain/bow, sun/shineandapple/sauceon hissixheartswhiletheothermightwritepan/cake, fire/fighterandrail/roadonhers.) 4.Haveeachpaircombinetheircardsandturnthemfacedowntoplayacompoundwordmatchinggame.
