Objectives
• Studentswilldefine“compoundwords.”
• Studentswillidentifywordpartsincompoundwords
andcombinewordstoformcompoundwords.

Materials Needed
• Hearttemplates
• ConstructionPaper(pastelcolorslikepinkandyellow)
• Scissors
• Markersorcrayons
• Chartpaper(optional)
• Tape
Preparation
Makeacopyofthehearttemplatesonconstructionpaper.Cutoutsixheartsandwriteoneofthe following
wordsoneachheart:sail, up, card, stairs, board,andboat.Makemorecopiesofthetemplatessoyouhaveone
copyforeachpairofstudentsinyourclass.
Procedure
1. Explaintostudentsthatacompoundwordismadeupoftwowordsthatarejoinedtogether.Sometimesthe
twowordskeeptheirmeaningswhentheyarejoinedtogether.Forexample,abackpackisapackthatyou
wearonyourback.Sometimesthetwowordsmeansomethingdifferentwhentheyarejoinedtogether.For
example,abutterflyisaninsect—ithasnothingtodowithbutter!
2.Writethewordsbaseball, mailbox,andcupcakeonasheetofchartpaperortheclasschalkboard.Invite
studentvolunteerstocirclethetwowordsthatmakeupeachcompoundword.
3.Loopapieceoftapeontothebackofeachofthesixheartcutoutsthatyoupreparedforthelesson.Stickthe
heartsinrandomorderonthechalkboardorchartpaper.
4.Invitestudentstochoosetwoheartsthatcanbecombinedtomakeacompoundword.(Studentsshouldcreate
thefollowingcompoundwords:sailboat, upstairs,andcardboard.)
Guided Practice
1. Tellstudentsyouwouldlikethemtopracticemakingtheirowncompoundwords.
2.Paireachstudentwithapartnerandgiveeachpairacopyofthehearttemplates.
3.Haveeachpartnercutoutsixhearts.Challengestudentstothinkofthreecompoundwords.Havethemwrite
eachwordpartononeheart.(Forexample,onepartnermightwriterain/bow, sun/shineandapple/sauceon
hissixheartswhiletheothermightwritepan/cake, fire/fighterandrail/roadonhers.)
4.Haveeachpaircombinetheircardsandturnthemfacedowntoplayacompoundwordmatchinggame.
Partnerswilltaketurnsflippingovertwocardsatatime.Ifthetwowordsmakeacompoundword,thestudent
keepsthecards.Ifnot,thestudentreturnsthecards(facedown)andplaycontinues.Theplayerwiththemost
cardsattheendofthegamewins!
