Trait Inventory
Use the chart, a partner, and a mirror to determine what genetic traits you have. After you make your
observations, share your observations with your table to create a bar graph. Talk about it and determine which
of your traits are dominant and which are recessive. Record your answers below.

Thinking about it: Answer in complete sentences
1. Did you have more dominant or recessive traits?
________________________________________________________________________________________
2. Do you think a dominant trait occurs more often than a recessive?
________________________________________________________________________________________
3. Having extra fingers (polydactyly) is a dominant trait. Having just 10 fingers is a recessive trait. If you
answered that a dominant trait occurs more often, how can you explain that almost (if not everyone) you know
has the “normal” number of fingers?
If you answered anything else, look at the list of dominant vs recessive genes and give another example of a
recessive gene being more common than a dominant one and explain why you think that dominance or
recessiveness is not related to how often a trait occurs in a population.

4. Look at the list of dominant vs. recessive genes. “Correct” your identification of dominant or recessive as
needed. DO NOT ERASE YOUR ORIGINAL ANSWER.
