Extension Exercise 1 – Cracking the Code
Chromosomes are made of long chains of a chemical called
.
DNA is made from four building blocks called
.
These bases have special names which are:
A C G T -
cytosine – bases –
thymine – DNA –
guanine - adenine

Inside each cell
we have 23 pairs
of chromosomes
A chromosome
looks like this
One gene is a
combination of
chemicals called
bases
This is called a
strand of DNA –
if you unravel a
chromosome it looks
like this
Every person is
made up of
millions of cells

Every person is made up of millions of cells. Inside each cell we
have 23 pairs of chromosomes.
A chromosome looks like a ball of wool. If you unravel a
chromosome you get a strand of DNA.
Genes are located along the strand. One gene is a combination of
chemicals, called bases.

Amazing Fact: DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic Acid (dee-ocksierye-bow-new-clay-ick acid) and is really made up of 4 chemicals.
