Earth Layers Study Guide
1) Draw a diagram and label the layers of the Earth.
[Crazy Men On Ice (Crust, Mantle, Inner Core, Outer Core) can help you memorize the layers of
the Earth from the outside inward.]
Thickest Layer- Mantle
Thinnest layer- Crust (under the oceans)
Hottest Layer- Core
2) What is the biggest difference between the outer core and inner core?
The Outer Core is made of hot liquid iron. The Inner Core made of solid iron
and nickel.
3) What is the asthenosphere and where is it located in the Earth?
The asthenosphere is slow-flowing rock in the upper mantle. It has a plasticlike consistency. Convection currents in the asthenosphere are the driving
forces of tectonic plate movement of the lithosphere.
4) What is the lithosphere and where is it located in the Earth?
The lithosphere is located between the crust and rigid upper mantle, and is
divided up as tectonic plates, which “float” on top of the asthenosphere. It is
noted as a part of the MANTLE, not the crust.
5) Which layer of Earth is the hottest?
The Inner Core
6) Which layer of Earth is the thickest?
The Mantle
7) Which layer of the Earth is the thinnest layer?
The Crust
8) What causes convection currents?
The intense heat from the Earth’s core.
9) What are the two types of Crust?
Oceanic and Continental Crust
10) What type of the Crust do humans live on?
Continental Crust
OPTIONAL EXTRA FACTS!!- Know these for extra points!!
 The mesosphere is the lower part of the mantle, where the rock flows even more slowly.
 A geologist is a scientist who studies the solid and liquid matter that makes up the Earth
as well as the processes and history that have shaped it.
 When the lithosphere moves, we get Plate Tectonics, which causes land to be destroyed
and new land to be formed.
