Directions: Read the entire story, and then respond in complete sentences to the questions. Make sure
you answer all questions:
1. Do you agree with the author that “women had it difficult in those days”? Does the same apply
today?
2. Discuss whether the Loisels chose the right course of action when they found the necklace was
missing? What other choices were open to them and why were they not chose?
3. What is the climax of the story? How do you know?
4. Indicate which type of irony (verbal, situational, or dramatic) exists in the final paragraph of the
story, and then explain why the last paragraph is ironic.
5. Did Madame Loisel’s desire for wealth and social status or fate (pure chance) bring about
downfall? In other words, was it simply bad luck that she luck the necklace or was it her own
fantasies to be wealthy that lead to her demise in the end? Explain your reasoning.
6. Do you think Madame Forestier will sell the diamond necklace and return the Loisels’ money?
