Newton's Third Law of Motion Newton’s 3rd Law of motion is one of the most important. 3rd Law : For every action force on a body there is an equal and opposite reaction force to it. These forces create actionreaction pairs. Newton's Third Law of Motion Examples : You pull on a rope, the rope exerts a tension on you. Dennis punches the wall, the wall punches Dennis Jory pushes down on the ground, the ground pushes up on Jory 1 Action Force: The boy pushes against the wall. Reaction Force: The wall pushes against the boy. Action Force: Earth Pulls Down on the man. Reaction Force: The Man pulls up on the Earth 2 Action Force: Moon Pulls on the Earth Reaction Force: Newton's Third Law of Motion Identify the action and reaction forces in the diagram 3 3rd Law problem A person steps on a movers dolly. What happens to the dolly? Does the person move relative to the ground? By the third law, for every step they take, the cart moves in the opposite direction. The person does not move relative to the ground. The dolly moves in the opposite direction of the person, equal to each step taken Newton's Third Law of Motion The cart has a fan and a sail connected to it. What will happen when the fan is turned on? 4 Newton's Third Law of Motion What are the action-reaction pairs? 5
