All atoms are made of 3 types of
subatomic parts:
Protons
 Neutrons
 Electrons





Most of the atom is
actually empty space
The center of the atom
is called the nucleus
The nucleus is made
up of protons and
neutrons all stuck
together
The electrons move
very quickly around
the outside of the
nucleus




Each atom has an atomic number which is
the number of protons that the atom
contains
The number of electrons in an atom is
the same number of protons
Therefore:
Atomic number=number of protons=number of electrons

An atom has an overall charge of zero,
therefore an atom is neutral.
Atomic number
7
 Number of protons
7
 Number of electrons
7
 Every proton is positive and every electron
is negative, therefore:
(+7) + (-7) = 0
Therefore, every atom of nitrogen is neutral
(no charge).


Only weighs the nucleus
Atomic mass number = number of protons + number of neutrons
Rearranged:
Number of Neutrons = Atomic Mass Number - Atomic Number
Look at the information on your periodic
table
What is the number of neutrons for fluorine?
Number of Neutrons = Atomic Mass
Number - Atomic Number
Number of Neutrons = 19 - 9 = 10 neutrons
Find Cesium on your
periodic table
What is the atomic number of Cesium?
55
What is the atomic mass number of cesium?

Atomic Number
Lithium has
protons and
3 Protons and 4 Neutrons
neutrons
Write the standard atomic notation and
determine how many protons and neutrons
are in the following elements:
a.Carbon
with atomic number 6 and mass
number 12
b.Helium with atomic number 2 and mass
number 4
c.Sodium with atomic number 11 and mass
number 23
Protons = 6
Neutrons =6
Protons = 2
Neutrons =2
Protons = 11
Neutrons =12
