NEWTON’S 2ND LAW
PHYSICS
Find the net force on each object below
6. Three forces act on an object initially at rest as shown below.
70N
5kg
35N
20N
(a) Find the net force on the object.
(b) Find the acceleration of the object.
7.
A rocket of mass 10000 kg on the surface of the earth accelerates upward at a rate
of 4 m/s2. Find the net force on the rocket
8.
A 10 kg block is being pushed across a rough surface at a constant velocity in the direction shown above
by a force F = 35N.
(a) Draw a force diagram for the block.
(b) What is the magnitude of the force of friction?
(c) What is the acceleration of the block?
9. An automobile with a mass of 1000 kilograms accelerates when the traffic light turns
green. If the net force on the car is 4000 N, what is the car’s acceleration?
10. In drag racing, acceleration is more important than speed, and therefore drag racers are
designed to provide high accelerations. Suppose a drag racer has a mass of 1250 kg and
accelerates at a constant rate of 16.5 m/s2. What is the net force acting on the racer?
11. A block on a table has a mass of 10 kg. A force of 20 N is exerted on the side of the block.
The force of friction between the block and the table is 5 N in the opposite direction. Find the
block’s acceleration.
12. A 4600 kg helicopter accelerates upward at 2.0 m/s2. What is net force exerted by the
air on the propellers?
