Rules to remember for completing chemical reactions:
1.
When a metal is placed in an acid, hydrogen gas is released and the metal combines with the anion from the
acid to form an aqueous salt solution.
Zn + H2SO4  H2 + ZnSO4
2.
When a metal is placed in water, hydrogen gas is released and the metal hydroxide is formed.
Na + H2O  NaOH + H2
3.
When a metal chlorate is decomposed, oxygen gas is released and the metal chloride is formed.
KClO3  KCl + O2
4.
During the combustion of a hydrocarbon, the products will be water and carbon dioxide. If the reaction is
incomplete, additional products like carbon monoxide and/or carbon will be formed.
Complete: CH4 + O2  CO2 + H2O
Incomplete: CH4 + O2  H2O + CO2 + CO + C
5.
When a metal oxide is heated, it decomposes into its constituent elements.
HgO  Hg + O2
6.
When a metal carbonate is heated, it will form the metal oxide and carbon dioxide gas.
CaCO3  CaO + CO2
7.
When a binary molecular dioxide or trioxide gas is combined with water, an acid is formed:
SO3 + H2O  H2SO4 sulfuric acid
CO2 + H2O  H2CO3 carbonic acid
SO2 + H2O  H2SO3 sulfurous acid
8.
In a double replacement reaction, the cations and anion from each compound exchange positions with each
other to form two new compounds. The gas or precipitate formed is identified by using the solubility chart.
K2CO3 + BaCl2  KCl + BaCO3
9.
In a single replacement reaction, a metal will replace the metal from the compound only if it follows the
activity series of metals. A halide will replace only the halide in the compound if it is more reactive.
Al + Pb(NO3)2  Al(NO3)3 + Pb
Cl2 + NaBr  NaCl + Br
10. If a metal oxide combines with water, the metal hydroxide is formed.
CaO + H2O  Ca(OH)2
11. If a metal oxide reacts with hydrogen gas, the elemental metal and water are formed.
Fe2O3 + H2  Fe + H2O
12. Hydrogen peroxide will always break down to water and oxygen gas. Light, heat and or heat will initiate
the reaction.
H2O2  H2O + O2
13. Water will always breakdown into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas with the use of electricity.
H2O  H2 + O2
