“sometruth”toMacbeth,Macbethclaimsthathehasnotthoughtofthematall
sincetheirencounterinthewoods.
BanquoandFleanceleave,andsuddenly,inthedarkenedhall,Macbethhasa

suddenlyappearonstage.Theycirclethecauldron,chantingspellsandadding
bizarreingredientstotheirstew—“eyeofnewtandtoeoffrog,/Woolofbatand
tongueofdog”(4.1.14–15).Hecatematerializesandcomplimentsthewitcheson
theirwork.Oneofthewitchesthenchants:“Bytheprickingofmythumbs,/
