Dear Parents and Guardians Friday 2nd December 2016 I can’t believe that we are already into December, the end of the year will soon be upon us. This week sees the launch of our Christmas Meal appeal. Last year we were overwhelmed by the support that this appeal was given from pupils and families. The idea behind our Christmas Meal appeal is that we help to provide a Christmas meal for people who otherwise may not get one. Like last year we are offering a prize to the form group with the most meal boxes. This week I would also like to draw your a en on to our safeguarding ar cle on the back page. I know that many parents have signed up to the Hillside app already but we would like as many parents signed up as possible before the big launch in January. The app is a quick and easy way for us to keep in contact with you and for you to keep in contact with us. If you have an Apple or android phone please could I ask that you download the app so that we can keep you up to date with informa on about the school. In the future we hope to develop this app so that we can link permission slips for trips, payments for school trips and informa on about your child to the app. We say goodbye to Mrs Jones this week, who is off on her maternity leave. We wish her all the best on the birth of her second child. Finally, Mrs Ryan will be returning to school from her maternity leave on Monday 5th December. I know that she has missed the school greatly and is looking forward to returning. Louise McPartland Associate Principal Weekly Literacy Task Each week at Hillside pupils have a Literacy Task to improve general spelling and grammar in all subjects. This week’s Literacy Task is to focus on homophones. Be aware of these tricky words, check with your teacher if you are unsure. Joe Hardie 8SG Nathan Seddon 8SC Garrison Osayande 7TJS Natalie Williams 11CCS Year 8 Take to the Skies Mrs Daly had a bet with year 8 that she could build a be er paper aeroplane than they could…and she was right. The first a empts were dire. Most of them didn’t even get past the launch table let alone down the corridor and Mrs Daly won by a country mile. So; the task was set as part of the homework to refine the models and have a re-match the following week. Mairaid Flanagan refined hers eleven mes and has a shoe box full of designs; some had weights a ached, some had reverse wings and some were just strange. Friday dawned bright, yet chilly, and the refined designs looked so good that we didn’t think that the corridor would be long enough so we went onto the back yard. We lined up on the launch line and got ready to throw our planes. Mairaid threw all eleven of hers and she was clearly consistent with her design as they all landed in the same place. The overall winner was Tyler Watling with the Kelly Flyer, Georgie Medway came a close second and one of Mairaid’s many designs came in at a respectable third place. Heart Dissec ons Year 9 and Year 10 scien sts have been carrying out heart dissec ons and at me our labs looked like a medieval butcher’s shop. We were very cau ous of the fact that we were dealing with a possible biohazard and so took all necessary precau ons when handling the hearts and cleaning up the work areas a erwards to avoid cross contamina on. We were clearly able to iden fy the four chambers of the heart although the top atria were quite small and so difficult to make out clearly. The ventricles were clearly visible as were the main blood vessels leading to and from the heart. We were also amazed to be able to operate the heart valves by pulling gently on the ligaments a aching them to the sides of the heart. This was a really interes ng lesson and most people enjoyed the chance to actually look inside an organ rather than just looking at picture or film clips. Dylan Peacock however was not impressed with the smell. Year 8 Mathema cs: Highest Common Factor & Lowest Common Mul ple Yinning Weng Mei (below) in year 8 has been teaching Mr Brannan a much easier method to find the highest common factor (HCF) and the lowest common mul ple (LCM) of two numbers. The method is simple and is shown below: Ques on: Find the HCF and LCM of 36 and 28 Step 1: Find any common factor of 36 and 28, put the common factor on the outside, like this. Step 2: You then divide 36 and 28 by the common factor you have found. This gives you these numbers Step 3: If there is s ll a common factor in the new two numbers you repeat step 1 and 2. Step 4: Now that there is no common factors of 9 and 7, we stop. To find the HCF, mul ply the numbers on the le , so HCF = 2 x 2 = 4. To find the LCM you mul ply all the numbers on the outside, so LCM = 2 x 2 x 9 x 7 = 252. The Hillside App for Parents In September we launched the Hillside App to Parents, we have had a good number of parents download the app and access informa on regarding their child. We would love to have more of our parents download the app so if you are interested please visit the school website and click the link at the top of the page. The app will work if you own an Apple or Android phone. Weekly Maths Challenge Shopkeepers Problem A shopkeeper prices his stock so that he makes 37% profit.
