LATVIAN ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY (LAS) EAS MEETING Rolle February 1 – 2, 2012 Vice president Ivars Smelds AGENDA • Historical background • Current status • AcMviMes • ScienMfic research • EducaMon Historical background • Latvian Astronomical Society (LAS) was established in 1947 as Riga (aTerwards – Latvia) branch of the Astronomical and GeodeMc Society of the Soviet Union. • Both professional and amateur astronomers were the members of the Riga branch of the Astronomical and GeodeMc Society of the Soviet Union. • The Latvian Astronomical and GeodeMc Society was founded on this basis upon re-­‐establishment of independence of Latvia in 1991. • In 1993 the Latvian Astronomical and GeodeMc Society was reorganised and the Latvian Astronomical Society was founded. • During the second half of the 20th century the main acMviMes of LAS were related with public lectures and seminars on different astronomical topics, public observaMons and scienMfic observaMons of nocMlucent clouds. Current status • Everyone interested in astronomy is welcome to become a member • Today there are 75 members in LAS • Wide choice of astronomical acMviMes – mainly public observaMons , seminars, educaMonal support and outreach • Latest news and opportuniMes for sharing the own astronomical experience on www.starspace.lv • Professional acMviMes including interacMon with poliMcians are going mainly in scienMfic insMtutes AcMviMes • Monthly meeMngs with lectures on astronomical topics for members and general public • Weekly observaMons in the public observatory of University of Latvia • Regular star parMes organized in collaboraMon with Starspace Ltd • Annual amateur seminars • Press releases and public observaMons regarding important astronomical events • Taking part in the internaMonal campaigns (IYA2009!) • Maintenance of internet website www.lab.lv • PublicaMons in newspapers, journals, magazines, radio interviews, TV shows… • Medal named aTer Janis Ikaunieks Public observatory of the University of Latvia in Riga During the star party…
