The Dewey Decimal Classification System Informational books in the library are organized according to a system invented by Melvil Dewey in 1876. A lover of math and sorting and organizing, Mr. Dewey, at the young age of 21, developed the method of organizing books that is still used in libraries around the world today. Before his invention, books in libraries were likely to be sorted in buckets according to how much they cost so that the more expensive books could be saved first in case of a fire. This method, however, made it hard to find a book by a particular subject. Dewey’s system made it much easier to find a book you were looking for in the library. Dewey identified books as belonging to one of ten major subjects listed below. Each of those 10 major topics was grouped by 100s. 000-099
