The Dewey Decimal Classification System Informational books in the library are organized according to a system invented by Melvil Dewey in 1876. A lover of math and sorting and organizing, Mr. Dewey, at the young age of 21, developed the method of organizing books that is still used in libraries around the world today. Before his invention, books in libraries were likely to be sorted in buckets according to how much they cost so that the more expensive books could be saved first in case of a fire. This method, however, made it hard to find a book by a particular subject. Dewey’s system made it much easier to find a book you were looking for in the library. Dewey identified books as belonging to one of ten major subjects listed below. Each of those 10 major topics was grouped by 100s. 000-099 General Works Everything Else – Room to Grow! Lots of information in one book or set of books. General reference works, computers, codes, world records & oddities. 100-199 Philosophy and Psychology Who am I? Books about us. What and how do we think? Optical illusions, brain research, question and answer books. 200-299 Religion and Who made me? Mythology Who is the creator? Bible stories, religions of the world, Greek myths. 300-399 Social Science Who is my neighbor? How do people live and get along? 400-499 Language How do I communicate with my neighbor? What language do you speak? How people live, the things we do, and folklore. Laws, crime, fashion… Languages, how we write, and grammar. 500-599 Natural Science What will I talk about? What is in this world around us? Science, math, and dinosaurs. Books on specific animals are also found here. 600-699 Applied Science What will I do with Science? How do we make nature work for us? How we use science in medicine and technology. Transportation, space travel, health, cookbooks and domesticated animals such as cats, dogs, and horses. 700-799 Arts & Recreation Time for a break! What will I do for fun and creativity?? Art, artists, how-to-draw books, crafts, origami, music, joke and riddle books, graphic novels and sports. 800-899 Literature Authors and books that make me who I am. We act and read poetry. Poetry, plays and classic literature. 900-999 Geography & History Who, What, Where, When, Why? How did everything happen? Where do you live?
