funded by the National Cancer Institute/NIH, 1R21CA137272-01, K. Winters-Stone,
PI, K. Lyons, L. Nail, Investigators) This 6-month randomized trial (2 groups) is
testing an exercise intervention designed for couples, “Exercising Together”.
Relevance to proposed study, recruitment using OSCaR cancer registry, data
analysis ongoing.
Study 2. Targeted Breast Health Education Program for Chinese Americans (20092013, funded by the American Cancer Society, F. Lee-Linn, PI, L. Nail,
Investigator) This study is a test of an educational intervention to increase
mammography screening among Chinese American women. Relevance to
proposed study: recruitment of Chinese women through Asian Health Services
Center, qualitative data collection from focus groups in the community in Cantonese
and Mandarin by PI and a translator at the Center, conduct of focus groups with
Korean women using a translator, study currently in progress.

funded by the American Cancer Society, K. Lyons, PI, L. Nail and J. Bennett,
Investigators) Longitudinal study of lung cancer patients and their primary
caregivers with focus on describing discrepancies in perception of symptoms. Study
includes a bereavement aim. Relevance to proposed study: Recruitment of
survivors using rapid case ascertainment in OSCaR cancer registry, enrollment
includes 25% of participants with stage 4 cancer, quantitative and qualitative data
collection by interview with cancer survivors and family members, study currently in
data analysis.
Study 4. Comparison of Aerobic and Resistance Exercise in Older Breast Cancer
Survivors (2007-2010, funded by the National Cancer Institute/NIH, 1 R01
CA120123 01A1, K. Winters-Stone, PI, J. Bennett, L. Nail, Investigators) This 3group randomized trial is testing the distinct benefits of aerobic vs. resistance
exercise, compared to a control group. Relevance to proposed study: recruitment of
older breast cancer survivors through OSCaR cancer registry, experience of Project
Manager named for proposed study, quantitative data collection and management,
study currently in data analysis.
Study 5. POWIR: Exercise During Treatment for Prostate Cancer: A Randomized
Trial (2006-2009, funded by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, K. Winters-Stone,
PI, J. Bennett, and L. Nail, Investigators). This two-group trial tested an impact +
resistance exercise program (using weighted vests) in men with non-metastatic
prostate cancer who are currently receiving Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT).
Relevance to proposed study: recruitment of cancer survivors through OSCaR
cancer registry, quantitative data collection and management, study currently in data
analysis.
Study 6. Life After Cancer (New Zealand) (2006-2008, funded by Genesis Oncology
Trust, NZ, J. Bennett, PI) This survey of 862 cancer survivors was the first major
study of cancer survivors in New Zealand. Multiple concepts were measured and
three papers have been published, with additional publications to come. Relevance
to proposed study: recruitment of cancer survivors using only community-based
recruitment including networking with support groups, stories in media, and local
advertisements, experience in data collection by large survey (40 pages) with little
missing data, quantitative and qualitative (open ended questions) data collection.
study complete.

Study (2006-2008 (extended), funded by American Cancer Society, K. WintersStone, PI, L. Nail and J. Bennett, Investigators). This two-group RCT of an
impact and resistance exercise program (using weighted vests) in premenopausal
BCS evaluated the effects of the program on bone, muscle, and fat mass, and on
physical function. Relevance to proposed study: recruitment of cancer survivors
through OSCaR cancer registry, quantitative data collection and management, study
currently in data analysis.
Study 8. Strength Training for Older Breast Cancer Survivors: A Randomized
Controlled Trial (2006-2008, funded by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, K.
Winters-Stone, PI, J. Bennett, and L. Nail, Investigators). This trial tested a
resistance exercise intervention (including weighted vests) in BCS aged 50+ on
physical functioning, compared to a control group. Relevance to proposed study:
recruitment of older breast cancer survivors through OSCaR cancer registry,
quantitative data collection and management, study complete.
