SACE Stage 2 Music - Music Technology. (comprising 3 x 30 second folio of minor projects and 700 words total for 3 commentaries) Additional Comments This folio is an A- grade. Student 1: Example 1 Minor Project: Loops and Waves 1 Nominated Process: Recording Loops Minor Project 1 Grade Explanation PA1 A PA2 B PA3 B KAC1 A KAC2 A Music is effective and successful with loops recorded cleanly and arranging evident across several loops created. Music intention stated with highly effective structure overall. Melodic development with textural contrast evident – creative use of layering of parts to demonstrate each loop. Loops play evenly, tracks effectively balanced. Addition of other processes evident to deliver a polished project throughout. 1.Highly effective explanation of nominated processes with reference to software and hardware used and variations in the application of the nominated process and supporting processes. 2. Musical elements and audio techniques discussed with clear intent and accuracy. 3. Identified and discussed manipulation of processes using appropriate terminology with correct and varied application. Student 1: Example 2 Minor Project: Loops and Waves 1 Nominated Process: Compression Minor Project 2 PA1 Page 1 of 3 Grade Explanation A Music is effective and successful with clear evidence of nominated process - compression being applied to the drum parts. Highly effective musical ideas presented that worked against the percussive sounds demonstrating compression amongst cleverly placed bass and percussion Stage 2 Music Technology Student Response Ref: A333345 (revised January 2014) © SACE Board of South Australia 2014 PA2 B PA3 B KAC1 A KAC2 A rhythms throughout. Creative and effective music ideas presented showing expressive and very capable use of the nominated process. The combination of loops and how they were presented showed a high level of mastery with regard to the technical requirements for this project overall. 1. The level of understanding demonstrated in the explanation of the technical and musical creation processes was extensive and highly effective. 2. Consistent and clearly effective use of appropriate musical and technical terminology presented. Student 1: Example 3 Minor Project: MIDI 2 Nominated Processes: Reverb and Panning Minor Project 3 Page 2 of 3 Grade Explanation PA1 A PA2 B PA3 B KAC1 A KAC2 A Highly effective theoretical melodic and rhythmic development enabling opportunities to showcase the nominated processes. Very creative and effective use of rhythmic textures to isolate panning and reverbs. Thoughtful use of reverbs and panning placement to accentuate melodic features and rhythmic variations. The piece demonstrates panning and reverb and a number of other processes in many ways but does not sound like a theoretical exercise. Pleasing and successful use of a range of processes. 1. Highly effective explanation of nominated processes with reference to software use. 2. Highly effective explanation of musical and technological intent with specific reference to the nominated processes and their manipulation within the minor project. 3. Musical and technical terminology used appropriately and effectively to support understanding of the overall recording processes used. Stage 2 Music Technology Student Response Ref: A333345 (revised January 2014) © SACE Board of South Australia 2014 A Practical Application Knowledge, Analysis, and Communication Highly effective musical goals achieved through the very successful combination of theoretical concepts and musical ideas. Extensive understanding demonstrated in the comprehensive explanation of the technical and musical creation processes, including aural analysis of recording and audio mixing techniques. A very high degree of artistic expression and creativity evident in the development of musical ideas, structure, and contrast. Highly effective and consistent use of appropriate musical and technical terminology. Very high mastery shown in the application of the techniques required for recording, editing, and processing, through the appropriate use of audio production processes and effects. B Effective musical goals achieved through the successful combination of theoretical concepts and musical ideas. A very capable level of artistic expression and creativity evident in the development of musical ideas, structure, and contrast. An effective level of understanding demonstrated in the detailed and clear explanation of the technical and musical creation processes, including aural analysis of recording and audio mixing techniques. Effective and consistent use of appropriate musical and technical terminology. Effective application of the techniques required for recording, editing, and processing, through the appropriate use of audio production processes and effects. C Generally competent musical goals achieved through the combination of some theoretical concepts and musical ideas. A generally competent level of artistic expression and creativity evident in the development of musical ideas, structure, and contrast. Generally competent level of understanding demonstrated in the appropriate and mostly clear explanation of the technical and musical creation processes, including aural analysis of recording and audio mixing techniques. Mostly appropriate use of musical and technical terminology. Generally competent application of the techniques required for recording, editing, and processing, through the appropriate use of audio production processes and effects. D Simplistic musical goals achieved through the combination of a restricted range of theoretical concepts and musical ideas. Some artistic expression and creativity, and some development of musical ideas and structure. Application of some of the techniques required for recording, editing, and processing, through the use of some basic audio production processes and effects. E Limited musical goals attempted, with limited application of any theoretical concepts or musical ideas. Limited level of artistic expression and creativity. Recognition, with limited application, of one or more techniques required for recording, editing, and processing, through the attempted use of one or more very basic audio production processes or effects. Page 3 of 3 Some understanding demonstrated in the description of aspects of the technical and musical creation processes, with some aural analysis of recording and audio mixing techniques. Inconsistent use of a restricted range of appropriate musical and technical terminology. Some recognition, with limited understanding, of the technical and musical creation processes, with attempted aural analysis of one or more recording or audio mixing techniques. Limited use of musical or technical terminology. Stage 2 Music Technology Student Response Ref: A333345 (revised January 2014) © SACE Board of South Australia 2014
