Mining Literature
◦ What is insight?
◦ What is the importance of complexity in literature?
◦ Think about the play, Othello. Give some examples of small details that you noticed about
one of the characters. Then, apply your powers of insight to come to some conclusions
about that character’s motivations based on those clues.
◦ Now, think of the main struggle that your character goes through as the story progresses.
What different social forces contribute to the complicated situation that the character is
in? Describe these forces (they may be large or small, internal or external), discussing the
way that they push or pull on the character’s choices and actions.
Othello
◦ Dying Lines
◦ Copy each character’s dying lines on a separate piece of paper
◦ Similarities? Differences? What does each set of lines reveal about the characters? What does
each set of lines reveal about the theme(s)/big ideas of the play?
◦ Finish the film
◦ Power and Voice in Othello – Act V
◦ Work on characterization charts
◦ Consider the following:
◦ Betrayal – what does the play ‘say’ about betrayal – If betrayal is explored or examined
through the characters of Iago and Othello – what is revealed about betrayal?
◦ Language – Who uses language? How is it used? How does Shakespeare use language in terms
of characterization? With whom? What does the language reveal?
