TOPIC The renewable energy resources solar, wind and hydro power generation. The advantages and disadvantages in the use of renewable forms of energy for environment’s safeguard The 4 Cs CLIL model Do Coyle CONTENT Students will know the dangerous effects of non-renewable energy resources realise the importance of the search for new forms of renewable energy COMMUNICATION Students will use and learn: • Topic vocabulary (environment, renewable / nonrenewable energy, fossil fuel, electron, electricity, matter, wavelenght radiation, photoelectric effect, solar cell, lens, mirror, wind turbine, windmill, blade, generator, tidal power, dam, kinetic / potential energy). •Functional Language for giving opinions, asking questions and making hypotesis COMPETENCE The activities will elicit both HOTS & LOTS– HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS & LOWER ORDER THINKING SKILLS . The Students will be connected knowledge and experience will apply their learning to save energy at home will plan strategies to involve other people in saving energy COMMUNITY LESSON PLAN Aim To develop an awareness of what are the advantages and disadvantages in the use of renewable forms of energy for environment’s safeguard. Level A2 – B1 Content – Subject Renewable Energy Resources - Electronics Use of grammar rules considering the student’s level and the functional language for giving opinions, asking questions, making hypothesis Communication – Language Approximate time overall Topic vocabulary (glossary): environment, renewable energy, nonrenewable energy, fossil fuel, electron, electricity, matter, wavelenght radiation, photoelectric effect, solar cell, lense, mirror, wind turbine, windmill, blade, generator, tidal power, hydroelectric dam, kinetic energy, potential energy. 10 hours Plan Short Description Links to Activities Stage 1 Introduction to the topic: solar, wind and hydro power Activity 1 Stage 2 Renewable and non-renewable energy resources: advantages and disadvantages Activity 2 Stage 3 Solar cells Activity 3 Stage 4 Research of other forms of renewable power generation Activity 4 Stage 5 Energy Bits project Activity 5 Evaluation During the five activities the students are assessed individually, in groups on: The comprehension of given information (ability to cooperate in groups) Their ability to follow procedures The use of functional language and the topic vovabulary The students will be evaluated using the results of their activities or worksheets, following an evaluation grid SCORES DESCRIPTION UNSATISFACTORY Student shows no knowledge of the subject and specific vocabulary ALMOST SATISFACTORY Student is lacking necessary background knowledge and uses specific vocabulary wrongly SATISFACTORY Student has essential knowledge of the subject. He uses specific vocabulary correctly GOOD Student shows a complete knowledge of the subject. He properly uses specific vocabulary EXCELLENT Student shows a complete and thorough knowledge of the subject Activity 1 – Topic of lesson Procedure It starts with a brainstorming activity, then the teacher asks Ss to complete worksheet 1. The teacher introduce the topic by watching the video with the title ”Different sources of energy. Using energy responsibly”. The video lasts 18 minutes and proposes several activities. The activity ends with a discussion about the content Approx. Time 2 hour Level A2 -B1 Learning outcome The Ss learn: the different sources of energy (Exploring energy) the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources (Energy is not unlimited) to use energy responsibly at home Indicators Active participation in discussions Knowledge and use of keywords Materials 1. Computer 2. Renewable and non-renewable energy resources.pptx 3. Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMOpMka6PJI Activity 2 – Renewable and non renewable energy Procedure The Ss read a scientific text about renewable energy resources, then they are divided into groups for three or four; the teacher asks groups to complete worksheet 2, worksheet 3 and worksheet 4 about the topic. As soon as all the groups are ready, they present their answers one by one to the rest of the class. Approx. Time 2 hour Level A2-B1 Learning outcome The Ss: learn some new words regarding the topic read a text with lots of new scientific words write about advantages and disadvantages mentioned in the text Indicators ability to select important information Link between energy resources and everyday life Use of topic vocabulary Materials 1. Worksheet 2 2. Worksheet 3 3. Worksheet 4 Activity 3 – Solar cells Procedure The Ss listen to a scientific text about solar cells, then the teacher asks them to complete the worksheet 5. The Ss can be now summarize information with a mind map on renewable and nonrenewable energy resources (woorksheet 6). Approx. Time 2 hour Learning outcome The Ss: Listen to a scientific text deduce the meaning of scientific language summarize informations with a mind map Indicators listening to a scientific text to draw out facts ability to guess the meaning from context Materials 1. 2. 3. 4. worksheet 5 worksheet 6 computer DVD Activity 4 – Other forms energy Procedure The Ss, divided into groups for three or four, carry out research activities on the internet for other forms of renewable power generation. They write a list on advantages and disadvantages of this other energy forms (worksheet 7). Then the Ss talk to each other in English. Approx. Time 2 hours Learning outcome The Ss: agree on the essential information on the internet discuss of social issues talk in English and interact with others write on advantages and disadvantages of other forms energy Indicators Use of creativity Interaction in group using English Sharing of knowledge with others Respect others’ opinion Materials 1. 2. 3. worksheet 7 computer Internet connection Activity 5 - ENERGY BITS Procedure The Ss partecipate in the project ”Energy Bits” through internet, by registering them at the site http://www.2020energy.eu/game and play games. ENERGY BITS is a multimedia project on energy conservation and sustainable energy sources supported by the EU program "Intelligent Europe"; this project has the objective of changes in behavior and promote innovative practices. Approx. Time 2 hour Learning outcome The Ss: know how to save energy speak and write in English are aware of their role in saving energy can use ICT for a specific purpose Indicators ability to select information application of new knowledge use of creativity Materials 1. 2. computer internet connection
