Polynomials
What is a polynomial function?
A monomial is an expression that is either a real number,
a variable, or a product of real numbers and variables
with whole-number exponents.
Examples: 6; x; 4y
A polynomial is a monomial or the sum of monomials.
Examples: 6; x + 6; 3x2 - x+2
The exponent of the variable in a term determines the
degree of that term.
The standard form of a polynomial: We write polynomials
in descending order by degree: 2x3 – 5x2 – 2x + 5

Classifying polynomials
Write each polynomial in standard form. Then classify
it by degree and by number of terms.
1. -6x + 3x2
2. -6x + 8x – 3x2
3. 10x2 + 8 -x
Classifying polynomials
Simplify and classify by number of terms:
(2v2 – 6 – 7v) – (6v2 + 9 + v) + (– 3v + 3v2 – 8)
