Cellular Respiration
End Goal: Transfer energy from bonds in glucose into ATP
Three Steps:
• Glycolysis
• Krebs Cycle
• Electron Transport Chain
Why so many steps?
• All at once = energy wasted as heat
• Gradual breakdown = keep more energy
• Glyco = sugar
• Lysis = split
Glycolysis
• Takes place in the cytosol
• Glucose is oxidized in ten steps (helped by 10 enzymes!)
• End products are 2 pyruvate molecules, ATP, and NADH
Glycolysis
• 2 Phases of glycolysis:
• Energy “Investment” Phase: 2 ATP molecules used (“spent”)
• Energy “Payoff” Phase: 4 ATP molecules and 2 NADH are made
