how a story is structured Exposition Plot – Exposition Also known as the introduction The setting (place) and main characters (people) are introduced Sets the foundation for the story We are introduced to Forks, Washington and meet Bella and Edward. Exposition What information does the author give you at the start of the story? We learn that Bella is new in town and that the Cullens are seen as kind of strange. Conflict Plot - Conflict The problem in the text The reason there is a story Gets everything started Conflict What types of conflict are present in the story? Which is most important, as you go through it? Edward saves Bella’s life– he stops a vehicle from hitting her. Bella and Edward struggle with their attraction to one another. Plot – Rising Action Events leading to the climax of the story Important details are revealed during this part Another vampire coven moves in; one of them (James) is intrigued by Bella and wants to kill her. Rising Action What event in the rising action drew you most in as a reader? Why? Bella is sent elsewhere, but gets a call from James saying he’s got her mother. Climax Plot – Climax The turning point in the story The point at which everything changes for the main character Usually the exciting part Bella surrenders herself and James attacks her. Climax This is usually the most exciting or suspenseful part of the story Edward, and the other Cullens, defeat James in a large fight, but Bella is poisoned and dying. Plot – Falling Action Events after the climax Important details dealing with the conflict/climax happen here Leads to the resolution Edward resists his urge to turn Bella and saves her life by sucking the poison from her blood. Falling Action How’s the action here different from the rising action or climax? Bella goes to the hospital and then decides to go with Edward to the prom. Resolution Plot – Resolution The solution to the conflict The ending of the story/text A resolution that ends in death for the main characters is a catastrophe Bella goes to the prom with Edward and asks if she can become a vampire. Resolution What does the author make you think or feel? Was everything wrapped up?
