Tides
Station 3
Tides
• 1. Tides- the periodic rise and fall of the water
level in the oceans and other large bodies of
water.
• 2. How does the moon affect Earth’s particles?
• The gravity of the moon pulls on every particle
of the Earth.
• But the pull on liquids is much more noticeable
than on solids because liquids move more
easily.
Tides
• 3.The golf ball in the bag represents the moon. If the
moon had the mass of a golf ball , the sun would have
the mass of approximately 110 school buses. Why do
you think the moon exerts more influence over tides
on Earth than the sun does?
• Gravitational force decreases with distance. The sun
may be bigger but the moon is closer causing a
greater influence over tides on Earth.
Tides
4. How many high tides and low tides occur in a
24 hour period?
Spring tide
• Spring tide- a tide of increased range that
occurs two times a month, at the new and full
moons.
Neap tide
• Neap tide- a tide of minimum range that
occurs during the first and third quarters of
the moon.
