With peace restored after the War of
1812, the US focused more on internal
affairs (our own back yard). American
leaders wanted to build national unity and
improve the nation’s economy.
Why does this objective matter to
the unit?

Democratic-Republicans will take firm control
of the government
After the death of __________ and the loss
in 1816 the Federalist party nearly vanishes

Monroe’s administrations are known as the
“Era of Good Feelings” because we came out
of the War of 1812 confident
No foreign wars
End of divisions between Republicans and
Federalists
Wanted to improve the economy
Monroe wanted to promote national unity
He conducted “good will tours”
The era was coined by Benjamin Russell of
the Columbian Centennial newspaper
Why was the era coined?
Many Americans now believed the Federal
government should take action to increase
economic prosperity
 Even Republicans began to see worth in
federal strength and programs
 Why is that a HUGE change?
 At this time three bright young members
of Congress became spokespersons for
their regions

How was the economy
strengthened?
Webster
Clay
Calhoun
New Congressional Leaders
speak for their region
Hamilton’s bank had expired its 20 year charter
Without the bank in operation, the nation’s
economy suffered
 State banks made too many loans and issued too
much money…hmmmm red flags anyone? Sound
familiar?
 This caused inflation
 Congress approved the second Bank of the US to
improve the economy
 Because the bank now existed under a
Republican administration is loaned money and
controlled the money supply
 This boosted American business


What happens to the
Bank of the US?

During Monroe’s administration British manufactures
were dumping goods in the US
Dumping is an economic term which means to sell
goods in other countries below market prices
How will this hurt the US economy?
Yes, consumers bought foreign goods instead b/c
they were cheaper
American manufactures demanded a tariff (?) to raise
the price of foreign goods
Congress passes the tariff of 1816, 1818, and 1824.
Northern manufactures loved the tariff (they could
compete with British goods), Southern agrarians
hated it! It simply made goods more expensive for
them to buy
What regional Congressmen will argue against this?
What else was hurting the
economy and how was it
addressed?
