Let’s Talk
About Anger
Let’s Talk About Anger (& Hurt)

Anger has serious consequences
◦ “Pent-up anger is probably the leading cause of
death!”
◦ 50% of heart attacks occur after an episode of
anger
◦ One minute of anger is found to suppress the
immune system for 6 hours

yo
Anger can make
you sick!
Let’s Talk About Anger

Look at Eph 4:26-27, what does it mean to
give the devil a foothold?
3 times the Bible tells us to get rid of anger
(Gen 4, Col 3:8, Eph 4:31)


The Bible does not tell us how to get rid of
anger but there are multiple ways to do it

What would happen if we get rid of it?

Exercise on how to get rid of anger
7 Reasons For Not Giving Up Anger

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Most will be able to but a few will not because of the
following reasons:
Shut down emotions
Too big, too deep, or too heavy
Fear of being hurt again or something
worse
Unconfessed Sin
Doubt
Spiritual or demonic influences
Belief that another person’s actions
are justified
One Effective Way to Rid of Anger:
Anger Release Prayer

Anger or…
◦ Disappointment, frustration, sadness, hurt,
mad, depression, hatred, etc.

In this exercise, you
◦ Replace [angry] with “disappointed” or
“frustrated” or another word that applies
◦ Replace [this person] with someone that
you are [angry] with. Maybe mom, dad,
self, God, etc.
Anger Release Prayer – Practice alone
 “Lord, I’m [angry] at [this person] because….”,
(Ex. “Lord, I’m disappointed at my dad because..”)
 “List out loud everything that you are [angry] at [this
person] about. When you are done, let me know. I
will teach you how to get rid of that anger.
 Repeat after me, “Lord I choose today to give to
you all this [anger] I have toward [this person].”
 “Now, I want you to gather it all up with an image
in your mind and give it to the Lord. Some put it in
a box or a bag. However you choose to do it, gather
it up in your mind and give it to the Lord. [Pause]
Importance of Testimonies

Reasons we should give testimonies
◦ Point people to Jesus
◦ Build our faith
◦ Encourage others to receive healing
How many received some healing from the
Lord?
 If not, ask the Lord for help.
 Testimonies
 Questions?

Anger Release – Practice In Pairs
 “Lord, I’m [angry] at [this person] because….”,
(Ex. “Lord, I’m disappointed at my dad because...)
 “List out loud everything that you are [angry] at [this
person] about. When you are done, let me know. I
will teach you how to get rid of that anger.
 “Lord (with your help) I choose today to give to you
all this [anger] I have toward [this person].”
 “Now, I want you to gather it all up and give it to
the Lord. Some put it in a box or a bag. However
you choose to do it, gather it up in your mind and
give it to the Lord. [Pause]
 “Report back what you sense, see, hear, or feel.”

Biblical Basis
For
Emotional Healing
Biblical Basis for Emotional Healing
In the beginning, God created everything
perfect until something happened
 What happened?

What caused the downfall of man?
Man’s sin?
Disobedience?
True but what caused man to
sin or to disobey God?
The Story begins in Genesis 3
Biblical Basis for Emotional Healing

Satan could not force them to eat

What scheme did he use?

“Did God actually say, ‘You must not eat from
any tree in the garden’?” “You won’t die… You
will be like God!”
Not Good Enough
Implication: You are
.
The Lie: Eat the fruit, and you can be as good as God

Biblical Basis for Emotional Healing
He deceived them
 What is the definition of ‘deceive’?

◦ To mislead by a false appearance or statement
◦ To mislead or falsely persuade others

Rev 12:9 Satan is the great deceiver
Biblical Basis for Emotional Healing

John 8:44 – Jesus said
the devil is the

Significance of this?
◦ He can’t force us to do something
◦ Rather he uses ‘lies’ to deceive us
◦ Once we believe in a ‘lie’, we will act on it as
if it’s true
father of all lies
Biblical Basis for Emotional Healing

After Adam & Eve ate the fruit, what
negative reactions or emotions resulted?
• Shame (naked & covered themselves)
• Shame is a combination of anger plus sin
• Fear/Hiding from God
• Blame
• Adam blamed God & Eve
• Eve blamed the snake
• Blame leads to anger/hurt
Biblical Basis for Emotional Healing
One of the main lies that we have
discovered that the enemy uses
 “You’re not good enough”

◦ Worthless, inadequate, no importance/value,
less than/inferior, useless, etc.
◦ Same lie

If a person believes this lie, how do you
think they would respond?
◦ “Poor me” -> depression, spirit of rejection
◦ Run to drugs or alcohol
◦ Performance “I’ll show you I’m good enough”

Surface Symptoms / root is I’m NGE
Genesis 4 – Cain & Abel
What
was
Cain
believing ?
Genesis 4: 1-8 – The story of Cain & Abel
 Cain & Abel
 What may have happened
◦
◦
◦
◦
◦
◦
Abel offered best of his livestock
Cain offered his vegetation
God preferred Abel’s offering
Cain got very angry. Why?
God asked Cain, “Why are you so angry?”
If you don’t control that, sin is at your door

What did Cain think and what did he
believe? What did Cain do?

Do things like this happen today?
What am I believing?
I’m Not Good
It’s
Hopeless
I’m
helpless
Enough
I’m rejected
I’m unlovable
I’m not important
I’m not special
I’m worthless
Three Root Lies Observed
Not Good Enough
1.
◦
“Worthless” / “Useless” / “Inadequate” /
“Not Important” / “Insignificant”
◦
Above the root – “I feel rejected”
Helpless or Powerless – Can’t do it
2.
◦
Above the root lie – “I feel alone” or “Out
of control”
Hopeless – No matter what I do
3.
◦
Above the root lie – (can be same as #2)
Discussion Time
In groups of 4 or 5 discuss:
◦ What are the 3 root lies?
◦ What does this look like in yourself or
others?
Session
The ASL In
Each
Hurtful Memory
Each Memory is a container

Each negative memory is a hurtful container
holding a lie. Sin & Anger keep the lie
hidden.
(ex. Adam & Eve in the garden)
• The Lie is inside that container
• Sin is the chain that binds the lie inside
• Anger is the padlock that keeps it bound
Each Memory is a container

It’s hard for hurting people to receive the truth when
until the lie is uprooted.

Good News: By Reversing the order, we can
effectively uproot the lie: First get rid of the Anger,
then the Sin and finally the Lie will be exposed and
dealt with. (ASL order)
What does the Bible say?
What does the Bible Say about how to deal
with Anger, Sin, and Lies?
• Anger –
Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along
with all malice.
Colossians 3:8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from
your mouth.
Genesis 4:6 The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, will
you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for[c] you, but you
must rule over it.”
• Sin
1 John 1:9 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.
Rom 10:9-10 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God
raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the
mouth one confesses and is saved.
• Lie
John 8:32 Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free
The Enemy’s Scheme
At what age will the enemy begin
to attack us with lies?
 He uses the same scheme over & over
 As we go through life, we accumulate many
hurtful container memories
 When we’re stirred up it is because we have
touched on a hurtful container that is inside
us. It’s like stepping on a landmine.

Each Memory is a container
As we get rid of our anger, we are
unlocking that padlock
 We have many hurtful containers

Problem in life is that…
Small issues become big and effect our
relationships because……OF LIES WE Believe
Hurtful memories are connected by
earlier hurtful emotions
 Emotions indicate what we truly believe

Problem in life is that…
FREEDOM comes when we
deal with & cut off the root

NOT when we deal with symptoms in
current memory
What is the LIE?
The enemy says you are NOT GOOD
ENOUGH!
It’s Hopeless
You’re Helpless
What is the TRUTH?
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to
give you a future and a hope.
 Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
 Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
 Psalm 139:14
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
 Galatians 3:26
For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.
 Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
 2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new
has come.
 1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,
that you may proclaim the excellences' of him who called you out of darkness into his
marvelous light.

Session 6
Step
&
Identifying ASLs &
Connecting to lower
memory
Hardest: Step 3 (Knowing when to stop)
3.
Identify ASLs in lower level memories
a) Identify Anger in a memory. Anger could include
disappointment, frustration, sadness, depression, fear,
shame, resentment, hatred, hurt, etc.
 “Are you [angry] at?” / “Are you disappointed or
frustrated at?”
 “How do you feel about”
b) Mark the “Sins”
 This could include actions, thoughts, or attitude
 Ex. sexual immorality, lust, addiction, not obeying
parents, envy (comparing themselves to others), pride,
selfishness, judgmental spirit, etc.
Hardest: Step 3 (Knowing when to stop)
3.
Identify ASLs in lower level memories
a) Identify the (root) lie(s) in the memory
1. “How does this make you feel?”
2. “How does this make you feel about yourself?”

(“What is it that you are believing about yourself?)
3. “Why? (ex. “Why are you afraid?”)
4. “What do you think would happen if…?”
5. Do any of these root lies of NGE, Helpless,
Hopeless seem true in this memory?
 Might not get to root lie but lowest emotion
 Stop at that emotion after 2-3 tries
Demo Step 2 & 3
3.

4. “What do you think would happen if…?”
5. Do any of the three root lies of NGE, Helpless,
Hopeless seem true in this memory?

Know when to stop step 3
Step 4
4.
Connect to lower level or root memory

“Can you feel that emotion (of being powerless,
worthless, alone, etc.)?

Allow yourself to feel that emotion and let your mind
take you back to a time in the past, maybe when you
were a little boy or girl when you felt the same
emotion…

Report whatever memory that comes to your mind.”

Steps in This Process
6)
Teach to love, hear & obey the Lord in every
area of their life

Ex. 1 – If Jane is afraid that when she goes back home, her
husband will continue to say hurtful things, you could ask,
“Lord, What do you want Jane to know about how to
respond to her husband when he says things to hurt
her again?”
Ex. 2- If she struggles with loving their daughter, you could ask:
“ Lord, how do you want Jane to love her daughter?”
EX. 3 – If she has questions about her purpose in life, you
could ask: “Lord, what are your plan and purpose for
Jane’s life?”


Steps in This Process
7)
Challenge them to fill their hearts now with
the words and ways of God. If they are not
believers, lead them to the Lord if possible.
◦ Share about Mat 12:43-45 about house being empty
and put in order and the demons coming back if the
house is not replenished with the words and ways of
God.
◦ Encourage them to get connected to a body of believers if
they are not part of a church
◦ Teach them to love Jesus by obeying God’s word. The goal is
to grow more in love for Jesus and to be transformed to be
more like Christ.
