Project history
2013-2014 prephase
2014 announcement of Danube Transnational Programme and Pre-Funds
03/2015 Workshop Hohenheim
► Centre of Competences approach as key idea of SIRA Danube project needs to be
adjusted for INTERREG proposal (budget) and broadened (to country situations and
different strategies to enhance innovation)
► smart combination of activities needed with other funds, since INTERREG is no means
for pure research and infrastructure investments
► Inclusion of pilot projects (also from other funding sources)
► Partnership is strong and expanded, but bias on academia
05-08/2015 START project activities
23 September 2015 call for proposal in Danube Transnational Programme
10/2015 planning workshop
And submission of expression of Interest in DTP
project concept: base
Focus on the bio-economy of rural areas
Bioeconomy includes all
economic sectors which use
biological resources such as
plants, animals, and microorganisms.
SMEs in Rural Areas in the Danube Region
Agriculture, forestry, the
food industry, but also parts
of the chemical, energy,
pharmaceutical, cosmetic,
and textile industries are part
of bioeconomy.
 have limited opportunities to benefit from R&D
programmes and activities
“Bioeconomics” designates a
type of economics that is
knowledge-based, innovative, and sustainable.
https://bio-oekonomie.uni-hohenheim.de/concept
 are hampered by a lack of market access for
products and services, lack of liquidity, big
share of shadow economy and frozen
investment plans
 comprise unexploited potentials for the valorization of agriculture and food value chains
 are agriculturally dominated with a high
percentage of small farms and micro enterprises
 face unsolved problems through aging
population, low living standards, poor
infrastructure and the respective effects on the
local economy, social and cultural life
Project concept: 1
Overall goals: SIRA Danube

as well as by-products and
residues
- capacity building of local and
regional actors of the bioeconomy
- transnational cooperation for
research and development

to the content of developing specific
products (e.g. trad. food), processes
(e.g. use of waste) and the respective
valorization in local, regional value
chains

non-discrimination, equality between men and
women)
Project concept
The knowledge triangle/ quadruple helix inputs to the project:
as a third dimension with the inclusion/ co-operation of different actors:
Research: Short-termed accompanying analyses support the development or
assessment of the case examples and deliver timely results to be used during
project life time.
Private involvement of praxis: ensures needs orientation, delivers the case
examples and implements pilots for experience gathering and sharing
Public involvement: supports project work of societal interest, improves
framework conditions and disseminates developed tools, approaches within the
related administration, services
Civil society: stakeholder involvement and re-assurance that the project activities
meet demand and needed problem solutions
