 Sound
is a mechanical wave that is an
oscillation of pressure transmitted through
some medium (like air or water), composed of
frequencies within the range of hearing.
Sound is a type of energy.
 When an object vibrates, it produces sound.
 Sound needs medium to travel.
 Sound travel faster in denser medium

How does human ear works
The eardrum is a thin membrane, which is stretched
tightly in the middle ear. It is also called the tympanic
membrane. If damaged, then it may result in severe
pain, loss of hearing, discharge of ear fluids, ringing in
the ear, etc.
The human ear works by transmitting sound vibrations.
These vibrations are picked up by the ear canal and
then amplified by the ear drum. The cochlea turns the
vibrations into nerve signals for the brain to "hear".
Sound needs medium to travel. The
mediums can be air, water or a solid
such as a metal wire. Sound can’t travel
through vacuum if an electric bell is
placed in a soundproof material in a
glass jar with vacuum, the bell will not
be heard. This proves that sounds need
medium to propagate. There is
complete silence in space because it is
almost empty.
Sound travels faster in denser medium. For example, it travels
faster through metal wire than through air which is lighter
medium. Similarly, sound travel faster in water than in air. This
is because the particles in a denser medium are densely packed.
The speed of sound in the air depends on temperature. The speed
of sound increases with temperature. This is because heat is a
form of energy .
The frequency of an oscillating particle is the total numbers of
oscillation made by a particle in one second. The unit used to
measure frequency of sound is Hertz
Amplitude is the maximum distance travelled by vibrating body
towards any one side from its mean position.
The amplitude and frequency of a particle of a sound wave is
also the frequency and amplitude of sound wave.
Sounds may be generally characterized by pitch, loudness,
and quality. The perceived pitch of a sound is just the ear's
response to frequency, i.e., for most practical purposes the
pitch is just the frequency. The pitch perception of the
human ear is understood to operate basically by the place
theory, with some sharpening mechanism necessary to
explain the remarkably high resolution of human pitch
perception.

vibrating the membrane with the finger or palm
Audible and inaudible sounds
Audible and inaudible sounds are relative terms. Audibility of
sound depends upon capability of ear. For example the human
beings can listen sounds having frequencies in the range from 20
Hertz to 20,000 hertz. Hence the sounds having frequencies
above and below this range are inaudible sounds for the human
beings. While bats and some other insects can hear sounds
having frequencies above 20,000Hz ( ultra sonic sound ) and in
such cases the ultra sonic sound is audible for such creatures
and the same kind of sound is inaudible to the human beings.
