Messiah as Judge, Standard, & Means of Judgment (Word)
The One Judge & Standard, by & through Whom Yahweh will judge; Jn
5:22,27,30; Jn 8:16; Ja 4:12; Heb 4:12-13
•
God is the sole source of all moral law: As Creator of ALL things, especially man
in His own image, right-wayness, righteousness, truth, justness, love, etc. are
qualities that flow forth from God as part of His being; He is the source of all good.
•
He is “the Judge of all the earth” (Gen 18:25) for all time; of living and dead.
•
•
•
For those during the patriarchal period, He was the source of universal moral
right and wrong. Adam, Seth, Noah, Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob/Israel, etc.
• for those under the Law (Moses), He was “our judge…our lawgiver…our king”
(Isa 33:22);
• for Gentiles during the Law-OT, He was the source of all moral law (Rom).
Since all have sinned, all have transgressed God’s moral laws; some while
under a covenant (Law), others outside the covenant (w/o Law, anomia) but
still under moral law and obligated/amenable to moral law.
He is judge of individuals and of nations, on the basis of righteousness, justice,
and holiness. Ps 89:14; 97:2-3; 67:4; 82:8; 110:6; Isa 2:4; Joel 3:12; Micah 4:3
All authority in heaven and earth, at the right hand of God, includes his role as
judge over all His domain. Jn 3:17; Jn 8:15-16; Jn 12:47-48ff
1.
Messiah as Judge, Standard, & Means of Judgment (Word)
The One Judge & Standard, Who by & through Whom Yahweh will judge; Jn
5:22,27,30; Jn 8:16; Ja 4:12; 2Pet 3:6-7ff
•
Judge ALL the living and the dead on the same day; Jn 6:39-47 Jesus says 4x that
the righteous will be raised at or in the last day. [1Thess 4:13-17; 2Thess 1:6-10]
• Jn 12:47-48 those who reject His word shall be judged “in the last day”
• Both unrighteous and righteous shall be judged “in the last day”; Mt 25; esp.
vv. 34-41, the unrighteous go away into eternal punishment, the righteous
inherit the kingdom prepared for them the foundation of the world (v.34);
there is NO 1,000 yr physical reign nor time-separation in judgments, nor
multiple judgment periods. All final judgment occurs “in the last day”.
• Mt 24:1-34 is judgment upon the OT Jewish system; it was brought to an end
as foretold (Dan 7, 9, Jer 22:30; 30:11;). This was judgment upon a nation, an
ending of that which was supposed to have ended on its own with
acknowledgment and acceptance of the Messiah and Christ.
• Compare Jn 6:39 to Mt 24:34 & Mt 25, as well as Rom 14:10,12; 2Cor
5:10, and Acts 17:30-31 for all judgment to occur “in the last day”.
•
Resurrection of Jesus is Yahweh’s guarantee/assurance/proof that He has been
exalted to the position of Absolute Judge, King, Ruler of ALL men. Acts 17:30ff
2. Messiah as Judge Who Confined, Crushed, & Condemned Satan
The Judge who Confined, Crushed, & Condemned Satan; Jn 16:11; Rev 20; Jn
12:31
•
•
Crushed the head (power) of Satan; Gen 3:15 - Acts 26:18;
•
Rev 12:9; 20:2 (Messianic reign = the assembly = Christian
dispensation);
•
Heb 12:22-29; removing those things which CAN be shaken
•
Heb 2:14-15 Since then the children share in flesh and blood, He
Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He
might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the
devil;
•
Since He is seated at the right hand of power, He therefore reigns,
rules, & judges with absolute authority; Mt 28
•
Jn 12:31 …now the ruler of this world shall be cast out
Condemned Satan; has prepared eternal confinement and punishment
for Satan and his angels; Mt 25:41; Rev 12:12;
3. Messiah as Judge, Most Just, Righteous in ALL His Ways (1Sam 2:35)
3.
The Judge (Most Just) righteous in ALL His Ways; 2Tim 4:8; Mt 10:15; 11:22f; Mt
27:19; Jn 8:16-18 [two witnesses, I & the Father]; Rom 2:2,5; 2Thess 1:5; Mt 3:17
•
Gen 18:25 – judge of all the earth shall deal justly (Abraham negotiating with
the Judge of All the Earth over Sodom, slaying the righteous with the wicked)
•
Psa 7:11 God is a righteous judge
•
2Ti 4:8 in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which
the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to
me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.
•
Mat 10:15 "Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom
and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city (that rejects the
gospel). Degrees of punishment inferred, as justice requires measuring against
the same standard the thoughts and deeds of all; Mt 11:22 woes upon cities
for failing to repent in the face of most of His miracles performed therein.
•
Mat 27:19 And while he (Pilate) was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife
sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; testimony
of a pagan unbeliever as to the righteousness of Jesus.
•
Heb 4:15 …One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

•
Messiah as Judge, Savior, Defender, Avenger for Justice
The Judge Who Saves/Protects/Defends/Avenges His people; Jn 5:24-27; Rev
16:5; Jn 9:39; Jn 12:31; 2Pet 2:9; Jude 1:15; Rev 17; Rev 18
Jn 5:24-27 …For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son
also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment,
because He is the Son of Man.
•
•
Jn 9:39 And Jesus said, "For judgment [krima]* I came into this world, that those
who do not see may see; and that those who see may become blind.
•
•
that which is the sole work of God, creation & life, lie in His sovereign
dominion and also within His jurisdiction – therefore, judging and executing
judgment belong to Him as do legislating and enforcing.
In addressing the design of His coming into the world, Jesus spoke as king and
judge; he spoke not as a preacher but as one knowing kingship, a kingdom, a
throne were due Him, and as a judge empowered to enforce, convict, and
speak w/ authority from the divine bench.
Jn 12:31 Now judgment [krises] is upon this world; now the ruler of this world
shall be cast out.
*Krima = the idea of separation / distinction between that which possess qualities of God and
that which does not. Krises= separating, dividing along criteria, a judicial determination.

Messiah as Judge, Savior, Defender, Avenger for Justice
The Judge Who Saves/Protects/Defends/Avenges His people; Jn 5:24-27; Rev
16:5; Jn 9:39; Jn 12:31; 2Pet 2:9; Jude 1:15; Rev 17; Rev 18
John 5:22 "For not even the Father judges [krino] anyone, but He has given all
judgment to the Son…”
•
krinō - to judge, decide: act as...judge, conclude, condemn, considered,
decide, determine, go to law, pronounce opinion, or pronounce objective
determination; apply criteria to make distinctions, find fault with, criticize; Lk
7:43, Rom 2:1ff, 3:1ff [3:4]
•
A brief word study of the Greek words used for ‘judge’ and ‘judgment’ is
included at the end of the lesson; you are encouraged to review these to note
the subtle differences in meanings of the different words.
•
Christ’s very presence in the world constituted a judgment, as did Act 2/Pentecost
when the gospel was first presented; His presence and Word constitute a
separation of good and evil, truth and not-truth, which is the primitive idea of
“judgment” (to separate in order to distinguish how things relate/compare,
discern differences according to criteria, distinguish, etc.);
•
The separation or distinction is ultimately between those who obey Him and
those who reject Him. Jn 3:17 & I Jn 2:3, Acts 2,3, the gospel going forth…
Messiah as Judge Appointed/Designated by God / witnessed by all the prophets
5. The Judge w/ Divine Authority Appointed/Designated by God
•
Acts 10:42-43 - …unto witnesses that were chosen before of God, even to us, who
ate and drank with Him after he rose from the dead. And he charged us to preach
unto the people, and to testify that this is He who is ordained of God to be the
Judge of the living and the dead. To him bear all the prophets witness, that
through his name every one that trusts/faiths on him shall receive remission of
sins.
•
Only God can forgive sin, Jesus forgave/forgives sin (witnessed by all as the
lame man walked), therefore Jesus was/is God => has jurisdiction over living,
dead, all things created; God’s designation of Jesus as judge = God attesting
yet even moreso that Jesus is His Son (voice at immersion, resurrection, etc.)
•
Judge of the Living & Dead, Judge of the world, all men throughout all time
•
Acts 17:30 - The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he
commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent: inasmuch as he hath
appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man
whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he
hath raised him from the dead.
•
Appointed A DAY…and ordained the one whom He raised from the dead
Messiah as Judge Appointed/Designated by God / witnessed by all the prophets
5. The Judge w/ Divine Authority Appointed/Designated by God
•
Judge of the secrets [hidden things] of men
•
Mat 12:36f - And I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they
shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be
justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
•
People don’t hear everything we say…only Jesus does!
•
Heb 4:12f For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any twoedged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints
and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there
is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid
open [tracheolitzo] before the eyes of Him with whom we have to do [give account].
•
Heb 12:22ff but ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God,
the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable hosts of angels, to the general
assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the
Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the mediator
of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better than that
of Abel.
•
Mediator of a new covenant/law + jurisdiction => judge of ALL
Messiah as Judge Appointed/Designated by God / witnessed by all the prophets
5. The Judge w/ Divine Authority Appointed/Designated by God
•
Judge of the secrets [hidden things] of men; to judge justly He must be God
•
Rom 2:16 - on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets
[κρυπτα – krupta] of men through Christ Jesus.
•
•
krupta – hidden, concealed; those things which are deliberately hidden, and
purposefully concealed from the sight/knowledge of all men
The power of Heb 4:13 explains:
•
There is no creature that is not manifest (exposed) in His sight: but all things
are naked and laid open [tracheolitzo] before the eyes of Him with whom we
have to do [give account].
•
To judge ALL men everywhere for all time JUSTLY and IN RIGHTEOUSNESS (the
right-wayness/absolute objective truth), to have jurisdiction over all things to
be such a judge. to have all authority in heaven and earth, for one’s word to
be ultimate objective truth, one must have existed before and outside of
time, space, matter, energy, i.e. one must be eternal, omniscient, omnipotent.
•
Only one who is eternal can have power over all things, death, hidden and
secret things, thoughts/intents of the heart withheld, etc.
Messiah as Judge Who is NEAR & Personal (He invites)
6. The Judge Who is Near & Personal; Jn 9:39; Ja 5:9; Jn 12:31; 1Pet 4:7; Rev
22:7,12,20
•
Ever-present = omniscient
•
Joh 9:39 And Jesus said, For judgment came I into this world, that they
that see not may see; and that they that see may become blind.
•
•
Jn 12:30-32 Jesus answered and said, "This voice has not come for My
sake, but for your sakes. Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler
of this world shall be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will
draw all men to Myself.
•
•
“came into this world” => not OF this world (Jn 1:1ff; Heb 1:1ff)
This drawing unto Him was/is a call to salvation, to become righteous
to be rescued from judgment as being unrighteous; the judge who
overcame Satan and cast him out called for a drawing near in a
relationship that is spiritually intimate and close.
Jas 5:9 Do not complain, brethren, against one another, that you
yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the
door.
Messiah as Judge Who is NEAR & Personal (He invites)
6. The Judge Who is Near & Personal; Jn 9:39; Ja 5:9; Jn 12:31; 1Pet 4:7; Rev
22:7,12,20
•
•
1Pe 4:6-7 For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to
those who are [spiritually] dead [cut off], that though they are judged in
the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.
The end of all things is at hand;
•
The ‘call’ or evangelization [ευηγγελισθη – heu+angh+elidzo] is to
those cut off spiritually (dead); the Most Just Judge calls for
repentance prior to judgment,
•
calls for turning to life in Christ and living according to the will of God
PRIOR TO legal examination, trial, and judicial decision/verdict.
•
The Judge provides warning of finality, frequently and forcefully
1Pe 4:17-19 For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of
God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who
do not obey the gospel of God? AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE
RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND
THE SINNER? Therefore, let those also who suffer according to the will of
God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.
Judge Who is NEAR, Approachable/Personal, Warns, Forgives until the end;
6. The Judge Who is Near & Personal; Jn 9:39; Ja 5:9; Jn 12:31; 1Pet 4:7; Rev
22:7,12,20
•
Most Just Judge Who is Longsuffering, not desiring that any should
perish
•
•
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count
slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any
should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
The Just Judge Who Warns
•
2Pe 3:10-13 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which
the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements
shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that
are therein shall be burned up. Seeing that these things are thus all to
be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy living
and godliness, looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the
day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire shall be
dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? But,
according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth,
wherein dwelleth righteousness.
Messiah as Judge Who is NEAR & Personal (He invites)
6. The Judge Who is Near & Personal; Jn 9:39; Ja 5:9; Jn 12:31; 1Pet 4:7; Rev
22:7,12,20
•
Is Near throughout our life, and unto the end of the world
•
•
Mt 28:20 - …I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
The closing words of the revelation of God’s new covenant warn:
•
Rev 22:7 And behold, I come quickly. Blessed is he that keepeth the
words of the prophecy of this book. [I am coming rapidly]
•
Rev 22:12 Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to
render to each man according as his work is.
•
Rev 22:20 He who testifieth these things saith, Yea: I come quickly.
Amen: come, Lord Jesus.
Messiah as Judge Who Shares His Judicial Power w/ the Faithful
7. The Judge who causes His people to share with Him to judge the world and
angels (shares His ‘bench’, throne, reign; 1Cor 6:2-3; 1Pet 4:17 Rev 20:4
•
Shares His judicial power w/ those faithful who overcome the world;
•
1Jn 2:13-14 …because you know Him who has been from the
beginning…you have overcome the evil one…because you know the
Father.
•
We have been given the means to overcome our accuser; we shall
judge him (angels) in the last day; 1Cor 6:2-3
•
1 Jn 4:4; 1Jn 5:4 You are from God…and have overcome them; For
whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that
has overcome the world--our faith.
•
1Cor 6:2-3 the saints will judge (krino) the world…we shall judge angels…
•

3) a matter to be judicially decided, a lawsuit, a case in court
Christ’s very presence in the world constitutes a separation of good and
evil, truth and not-truth, which is the primitive idea of “judgment”
(separate, discern, distinguish, etc.);
The separation or distinction is ultimately between those who obey
Him and those who reject Him. Jn 3:17 & I Jn 2:3.
Jn 9:39 And Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, that
those who do not see may see; and that those who see may become
blind.
Jn 9:40 Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these
things, and said to Him, "We are not blind too, are we?"
The Pharisees mocked Jesus before the listeners with a rhetorical
question stating either
(1) what was the obvious case physically, that they were not physically
blind, [therefore, they “see” or apprehend]
OR
(2) knowing what Jesus thought of them, they mocked Him w/ their
self-professed and self-validated knowledge, and their self-established
‘righteousness’, i.e. that they were not “spiritually blind, ignorant or
lacking in knowledge”; they were the learn-ed ones, who thought
they ‘saw’ or apprehended what was before them, which is why they
claimed “we see” [we are not blind].
Jn 9:39 And Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, that
those who do not see may see; and that those who see may become
blind.
Jn 9:40 Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these
things, and said to Him, "We are not blind too, are we?" [i.e. we see]
========================================================
Either way, they admit by the converse of their own question that they
believed that they ‘see’, therefore without realizing it, they were in
fact blind (spiritually), and could not see that they were blind (even
worse); this is why Jesus says “since you say, ‘we see’, your sin
remains.” [they did not ‘see’ or recognize the Messiah]
In their arrogance and mockery, they revealed their guilt, and
separated (condemned) themselves by their own words and actions.
Jn 9:41 Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin;
but since you say, 'We see,' your sin remains (ignorance/darkness).
