HOW TO LABEL GEOMETRIC SHAPES
Right Angle – Each angle whose measure is
90° should be marked with a square at that
angle
A
B
Q
Example:
D
C S
R
This would be read: “Angles A, B, C, and D are right angles.”
“Triangle QRS is a right triangle.”
Equal Sides – The first set of equal length sides
is marked with one line on each side. The
second set of equal length sides, but
different length from the first set (on the
same figure as the first set) is marked with
two lines on each side, etc.
L
M F
G
Example:
O
This would be abbreviated/read: LM = NO
MN = OL
N
I
H
FG = HI
GH = IF
Parallel Sides – The first set of parallel sides is
marked with one arrow on each side. The
second set of parallel sides, but at a
different angle from the first, is marked with
two arrows on each line, etc.

C V
This would be abbreviated/read: AB CD

*Remember – you may use more than one
symbol on a figure.
Example:

This would be abbreviated/read: JK LM and JK = LM;
and KL MJ and KL = MJ
