Vol 1 • Issue 6
Welcome to the sixth edition of “What’s Up?” a monthly newsletter detailing
everything you need to know about your Relay For Life of Greater Ayer! To get
your story featured, just send it to Katy at [email protected].
Cancer Awareness Month
In March we celebrate the awareness months for 3 different types of
cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Kidney Cancer, and Multiple Myeloma. The
American Cancer Society is working hard to spread the word about its
latest movement, 80% by 2018, which aims to achieve an 80%
colorectal cancer screening rate by the year 2018. Early detection
can save thousands of lives from the pain and suffering of colon
cancer. To learn more about the 80% by 2018 initiative and colorectal cancer,
visit http://www.cancer.org/cancer/colonandrectumcancer/index.
The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 62,700 new cases of
kidney cancer in 2016. Kidney cancer is among the 10 most common cancers in both
men and women. Overall, the lifetime risk for developing kidney cancer is about 1
in 63 (1.6%). This risk is higher in men than in women. To learn more about
kidney cancer please visit http://www.cancer.org/cancer/kidneycancer/index.
Multiple myeloma is a cancer formed by malignant plasma cells. The American
Cancer Society estimates there will be 30,330 new cases of multiple myeloma in
2016. Multiple myeloma is a relatively uncommon cancer. In the United States, the
lifetime risk of getting multiple myeloma is 1 in 143 (0.7%). To learn more about
multiple myeloma please visit http://www.cancer.org/cancer/multiplemyeloma/index.
Paint for a Cure
Thank you to everyone who was able to
attend our 2016 Kickoff event: Paint For A
Cure! We had a great time painting a
beautiful Tree of Life with expert
instruction by Cheryl from the Tinker’s
Cart in Clinton. We are thankful to our
hosts Hilton Garden Inn on Devens, for
graciously donating the space for our
event. Here’s a great shot of everyone’s
masterpieces at the end of the class.
Join us at an upcoming Team Meeting/Relay Rally
The schedule is set for the remainder of the season! We’d love to see you at an
upcoming Team Meeting/Relay Rally. We know your time is precious so we’ve
shortened meetings to only 30 min! We cover topics that are important to you AND
we have fun while doing it. Each meeting will feature a door prize, fun game, and
the answers to all your Relay questions.
Meetings are open to everyone, not just Team Captains – we
hope to see YOU at the next one!

Fundraising Tip of the Month
Host a Bakeless Bake Sale. Ever get tired of having to bake another batch of
cupcakes or cookies to donate to a bake sale? Well, the bakeless bake sale takes
the hassle out of that and asks that instead of contributing baked goods, you
contribute the amount of money you would have spent buying ingredients or
purchasing some goodies. Check out this cute poem you can include with it:
Many is the time I heard you say
I would rather give a "Dollar" than bake today
And so, we are asking you to help more or less
To make our Bakeless Bake Sale a big success.
Just send us the money that it would take
To Bake a loaf of bread or a beautiful cake
Or send in the amount of money it takes to buy
A dozen rolls or maybe a pie
We know you can help us if you will but try.
I am buying or baking the items marked below.
