Not a lack of talent but a lack of acceptance and appreciation
Double standards
St Edmundsbury Museums
● Beale wrote a book that
was never published, but
was one of the first
instructional books written
by a woman. It announced
her authority as an artist.
● Her portraits were
displayed in her home so it
was easy for a male critic
to give her a bad
reputation by portraying
her personal life in an
impure manner.
Mary Beale, Jane Fox, Lady
Leigh as a Shepherdess, 1675.
Sandro Botticelli was an
early Renaissance painter.
His work was recognized
after he was hired by the
wealthy Medici family to
create paintings for them in
Florence, Italy.
The highpoint of his life was
in his middle ages when he
had earned all his contacts,
money, and fame thanks to
the Medici’s patronage.
He was given very high
honors late in his life, such
as painting parts of the
Sistine Chapel for the Pope
in Rome.
His fame was welldeserved.
Botticelli, Birth of
Venus, 1484-1486.
