Circulatory System
I. Three parts
A. Heart
a. Pumps that keeps the blood moving
B. Blood
a. Carries food and oxygen to the body cells
b. Carries wastes (carbon dioxide) away
C. Blood vessels
a. Path that the blood takes
II. Helps protect you
A. Blood carries germ fighters (white cells) to the
part of the body where they are needed
B. Blood takes heat away from your organs, to
your skin where it can leave your body
III. Blood Vessels
A. Largest are Arteries
a. Carry blood away from the heart
b. Blood is rich in oxygen
c. Dark red color
IV. Capillaries
A. Smallest blood vessels
B. Blood carries food and oxygen to the cells
C. Blood carries wastes (carbon dioxide) away
V. Veins
A. Larger than capillaries, but smaller than
arteries
B. Carry blood to the heart
C. Blood has lost its oxygen
D. Blood is a bluish color
VI. The Heart
A. 2 sides
B. Each side has 2 chambers (4 totals chambers)
C. Blood from the body that is carrying waste
enters the top right chamber.
D. From there it flows through a valve (only
allows blood to flow in one direction) to the
bottom right chamber.
E. The bottom right chambers pumps blood to
the lungs where the blood will get a new
supply of oxygen and drop off the carbon
dioxide.
F. The blood now has a supply of oxygen and
flows to the top left chamber.
G. It then passes through a valve to the lower left
chamber.
H. The blood is then pumped to all parts of the
body.
VII. Blood
A. About half of blood is liquid (PLASMA),
which is mostly water
a. Holds the food that the blood delivers
b. Carries the waste made by the cells
c. Brings the germ fighters (white cells)
where they are needed.
B. Red blood cells
a. Carry the oxygen to the cells
b. Need iron to do their job
C. White blood cells
a. Help the body fight disease
