 5th Grade: Earth’s Spheres Assessment Rationale This ACT Aspire­inspired assessment was developed to assess students understanding of the Arkansas K­12 Science Standards as well as to prepare students to take the ACT Aspire in Science. The format of these prompts and questions were developed to reflect the format, skills, and practices of the ACT Aspire summative assessment. Teacher Instructions This packet contains an answer key followed by blank student pages. The answer key shows the correct answers in bold for multiple choice and sample constructed responses. ACT Aspire Summative Resources Table 3.24 outlines the ACT Aspire Science summative assessment: The following is a list of additional resources teachers can use in their classroom to prepare their students for the Science section of the ACT Aspire Assessment. ❏ Readiness Standards ­ ACT Aspire document reviews the strands of science where questions will be derived. The solid part of the Earth's crust, consisting of rocks and soil, is known as the geosphere. The layer of gases surrounding the earth is known as the atmosphere . The hydrosphere includes all the Earth's water found in the oceans, glaciers, streams, lakes, the soil, groundwater, and in the air. The hydrosphere interacts with all the other Earth spheres. The water of the hydrosphere is distributed among the other spheres. Table 1 Distribution of Water in the Hydrosphere Saltwater Fresh Water Oceans 97.5% Ice Caps and Glaciers 1.97% Atmosphere 0.001% Lakes, Rivers, Soil 0.03% Groundwater 0.5% The water cycle t races the movement of water and energy between these various spheres. As energy and materials flow between these first three spheres, conditions for life to exist are produced which supports the fourth sphere.
