Following, are suggestions of what type of materials you and your group might want to
use for your cell model. Look around the house and be creative with materials that

Cell – shoe box/pizza box/wooden or cardboard board
Cell membrane/Cell wall – something linear that can bend
Cytoplasm – since its jelly-like, we can’t use anything wet, but things like cotton
balls, Easter basket grass work well
Nucleus – a round object larger than all the other round objects you will be using
o A large lid or small cup or a slurpee lid works well
Nucleolus – a smaller round object
Chromosomes – small straight structures that can be made into an “X”
Centriole – something that looks like bundles of tubes
Ribosomes – very small round objects
Rough ER – long stringy material with small round things on it (you can glue them
on)
Smooth ER – long stringy material
Mitochondria – oval shaped objects
Chloroplasts – oval shaped objects (green)
Golgi complexes – objects that can layer on top each other
Vesicles – small round objects
Vacuole – small round objects for animal cell, but a large balloon like object for a
plant cell, a plastic container that you would normally recycle would work well (like
a container for tomatoes or strawberries)
Lysosomes – small round objects
Plastids – small round objects
Suggestions for linear organelles: spaghetti, string, yarn, ribbon, string licorice, stick
pretzels, paper clips, rubber bands, straws, pipe cleaners, toothpicks
Suggestions for round organelles: round cereal, round candy, small lids, beads, pompoms, marbles, buttons
Suggestions for oval organelles: beans, erasers, clay, pipe cleaners, paper clips
