 St.George Shuttle Policy On Animals in Vans St.GeorgeShuttlehasanestablishedapolicywhichappliestoallanimalsridingorbeingtransportedin
itsvehicles.St.GeorgeShuttlestrivestoabidebyalllaws,stateandfederal.ThereforeonJuly23,2010,
Attorney General Eric Holder signed final regulations revising the Department’s ADA regulations,
including a revised definition of “service animal.” This final rule was published in the Federal Register
September15,2010,andiscurrentlyinaffect.
Definitionofaserviceanimal:EffectiveMarch15,2011,“Serviceanimalmeansanydogthatis
individuallytrainedtodoworkorperformtasksforthebenefitofanindividualwithadisability,
includingaphysical,sensory,psychiatric,intellectual,orothermentaldisability.”(Allotheranimalsare
excluded.)“Serviceanimalsaredefinedasdogsthatareindividuallytrainedtodoworkorperformtasks
forpeoplewithdisabilities.Examplesofsuchworkortasksincludeguidingpeoplewhoareblind,
alertingpeoplewhoaredeaf,pullingawheelchair,alertingandprotectingapersonwhoishavinga
seizure,remindingapersonwithmentalillnesstotakeprescribedmedications,calmingapersonwith
PostTraumaticStressDisorder(PTSD)duringananxietyattack,orperformingotherduties.Service
animalsareworkinganimals,notpets.Theworkortaskadoghasbeentrainedtoprovidemustbe
directlyrelatedtotheperson’sdisability.Dogswhosesolefunctionistoprovidecomfortoremotional
support“DONOT”qualifyasserviceanimalsundertheADA.Theworkortasksperformedbyaservice
animalmustbedirectlyrelatedtothehandler´sdisability.”
ForthepurposeoftheSt.GeorgeShuttle’sdaytodaybusinessoperationthisdefinitionshallbefollowed
plusallcustomersshallbeinformedofthispolicyatthetimeofbooking.Thepolicyisfurtherclarifiedby
theuseofthefollowing:
1.Dogswhosesolefunctionis“theprovisionofemotionalsupport,well‐being,comfort,
orcompanionship”arenotconsideredservicedogsundertheADA.
2. The use of service dogs for psychiatric and neurological disabilities is explicitly
protectedundertheADA.
3.“Thecrimedeterrenteffectsofananimal'spresence”donotqualifythatanimalasa
service animal and “an animal individually trained to provide aggressive protection,
suchasanattackdog,isnotappropriatelyconsideredaserviceanimal.”
4. Service animals are required to be leashed, caged or harnessed except when
performingworkortaskswheresuchtetheringwouldinterferewiththedog'sabilityto
perform.
