African Imperialism: Performance Task

Overview: Working in groups, you will create a book that teaches the essential question
for your chosen country: How did the New Imperialism affect Africa?

Research: There are 4 areas to cover in your project. Each group member should be
responsible for ONE area only. As a group, you will come together to produce a power
point presentation, but your work will be graded individually.
GUIDING QUESTIONS
Geography & History:
Locate your country on a map of Africa
What distinctive geographic features
comprise your country?
What natural resources are available?
How does weather and climate impact the
country?
Provide a history of the country prior to
Imperialism (up to the year 1800 –
approximately).
Include in the history:
 Description of government

 Social organization of the people
 Economy

What European power colonized your
country?
Why did they colonize (what were the
specific European motives)?
What kind of imperialism was practiced?
(sphere of influence? Protectorate?

In researching and presenting about these
people, you must cover 5 of the following
topics:

7. Beliefs/ Rites of Passage/ Holidays

Group Power Point Requirements:
 The group is responsible for creating ONE power point presentation. You can work on
individual computers but you will have to merge your power point slides into one project
 You must email [email protected] your finished project by Monday March 10th at
3pm. Late projects will receive a 10% deduction per day. Only completely finished
projects will be accepted.
 The presentation must have a TITLE SLIDE that includes:
 All group members’ names
 The essential question: How did the new imperialism affect ___(name of
country)_____?
 The presentation must have a SOURCE SLIDE that includes:
 A list of sources (in MLA format)
 Please list the sources by content and person: ExampleJane Doe, Geography of Nigeria

Individual Slide Requirements:
 Title (can be the question you will answer in that slide)
 Photo/ Image/ Video (maps, political cartoons, example via video, etc)
 Information that is easy to read and that you will elaborate on in your presentation
 Do not use bullet points that consist of a few generalized words
 I should be able to review your slides without your presentation and still get the
“meat” of your research
Presentation Requirements:
 Each person in the group is expected to present their slides on the assigned day (if absent,
parent and/or doctor note required for makeup time)
 Each person should present for approximately 5 minutes (a total of 20 minutes per group)
 During your presentation, do not just read the power point slides! Explain to the class the
information; give us an example; in other words, TEACH.
Grading:
You will receive THREE grades for the project totaling 150 points as a major assessment
