Sacramento Public Library Authority November 30, 2011 Agenda Item 13.0: License Agreement: EBSCO for Periodical Databases TO: Sacramento Public Library Authority Board Members FROM: Nina Biddle, Library Materials Manager RE: License Agreement: EBSCO for Periodical Databases RECOMMENDED ACTIONS: Adopt Resolution 11-58, A Resolution Approving the Licensing Agreement with EBSCO for a Collection of Periodical, Newspaper, and General Research Databases. REASON FOR RECOMMENDATION In 2008, the Sacramento Public Library Authority Board approved a five-year contract with Gale for a collection of periodical and newspaper databases. In reviewing usage statistics and relative costs of other purchased databases in September 2011, library staff determined the selection of databases in the package was not cost effective. Providing online access to major magazines, newspapers, and journals is still a core service Sacramento Public Library provides to the community. Therefore, a Request for Quotation was released on October 3, 2011 to identify periodical database vendors. Two vendors responded, including EBSCO, which offered the best selection of content for less than half the cost of the competitor. With its lower cost and superior content, EBSCO was selected as the database provider. The collection of databases provided by EBSCO will provide 24/7 online access to thousands of periodicals, including major publications like the New York Times and Consumer Reports. This collection also offers a reader’s advisory tool for helping patrons choose what to read next, as well as databases for elementary and high school students featuring a searchable, kid-friendly interface with articles and research materials written for the appropriate age-level. Serving the community’s information needs in the most effective and efficient way is an important goal for the Sacramento Public Library, and this collection of online, easily accessible periodical and basic research databases will play a crucial role in that endeavor.
