common human or physical characteristic.
• FACTS, boundaries that can be PROVEN!

FUNCTIONAL REGION
• An area defined by one function that may cross political
boundaries that HAS A USE (FUNCTION)!
•A region formed by a set of places and their functional integration (Ex.
River systems, Highways, Railroads systems, Communication systems,
etc.)
Example:
• Ft. Worth/Dallas Metroplex
• Utilities
• Electricity
• Pizza delivery
• Phone service

Perceptual Region
• A region that is marked by unique human
ideas or perceptions. OPINIONS!
• Examples:
– The “South” v. the “North”
– The “Middle East” v. “Southwest Asia”
– “Dixie” or “Deep South”
– “The Big Apple”
– Hillbillies live there
